Job Description: 

The Head Rig Saw Operator is responsible for operating the company’s McDonough 6' RH High Strain Band Head Rig in a safe and efficient manner while achieving the production goals.  The operator is also required to perform routine maintenance on this machine center. 

Essential Functions:

  • Must comprehend and adhere to all safety practices and perform tasks in a safe manner.

  • Must be proficient in operating the Head Rig Saw.

  • Must maintain a safe, clean and organized working environment around the individual’s work area including clearing saw dust, wood and debris from area.

  • Must learn and perform the lock out procedures on the machine center and be rigorous in the application of lock-out/tag out procedures while doing routine cleaning and maintenance.

  • Must perform basic machine maintenance.
  • Must understand and adhere to all company established practices applicable to employees including those relating to safety, conduct and attendance.
  • Will be cross-trained in a variety of positions and must be willing to perform those functions as required.
  • Must cooperate with other sawmill workers and maintain a healthy and supportive team workplace environment.
  • Other duties as required.  

Essential Functions

  • Through our training program, become proficient on machine center operations.
  • Monitor performance of machine center to spot discrepancies in machine performance or product output.
  • Cleaning work areas removing saw dust, wood and debris
  • Use of hand tools to clean area, broom, shovel, rake, etc.
  • Use air hose to clean machines free of dust and debris
  • Comprehend and perform all duties in accordance with safety rules and regulations
  • Learn the lockout steps for each machine operated
  • Basic machine maintenance

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Valid driver's license

  • Must be at least 18 years of age

  • Must be safety conscious, self-directed and team oriented

  • Willing to work various shifts including 12 hour shifts and weekends

  • Experience in manufacturing environment preferred

  • Successfully pass pre-employment physical, drug screen and background check

  • Must be able to read, write, speak and comprehend basic English in order to cross train and fill in at a variety of job locations

Work Environment:

Head Rig Operator operates equipment in a climate-controlled, sound proof booth but will be required to perform inspection and routine tasks supporting the equipment and work flow in the general saw mill setting with ambient temperature; noisy environment; subject to saw dust.

Personnel Protective Equipment required:  Safety boots and hard hat at all times and safety glasses, ear protection and gloves, while performing tasks outside the operator booth.

Physical Demands – Repetitive tasks, physically demanding, manual dexterity, attention to detail, hand-eye co-ordination, sitting for extended periods of time, combination of sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, kneeling. 

 Mental demands - Must be able to concentrate and stay alert in a fast paced environment, meet production requirements, and exercise independent judgment to determine what action needs to be taken to maintain the quality standards of the facility.  Must be able to read an interpret computer screens and gauges for the optimal performance of the equipment.

Ability to manipulate controls, levers, and valves to start pumps, auxiliary equipment, or conveyors, and to adjust equipment positions, speeds, timing, and material flows.

Communication skills - must be able to understand and follow verbal and written direction.  Must be able to communicate effectively with supervisor and coworkers.

Personal Expenses:

Sawmill machine operators are required to provide their own steel-toed safety boots. The company may provide a boot allowance.

Experience:

At least 1 year of verifiable sawmill head rig saw machine operator experience.   Experienced head rig operators will be required to demonstrate expertise in the operation of the equipment at a rate that is sufficient to achieve the company’s performance goals.

Compensation

Wage: $16/hour plus some relocation
