Safety / Environmental Manager (Management & Executives)

Weyerhaeuser Grande Prairie is looking for a Safety/Environmental Manager that will be part of the mill leadership team with a focus to continually improve site safety and the environmental footprint. The ideal candidate will share Weyerhaeuser core values of safety, integrity, citizenship and sustainability.

Key Functions:
  • Provide full time health and safety support to the site and ensure that all practices are in compliance with corporate and regulatory agency requirements.
  • Build a positive working relationship with all mill departments, OH&S committee and regulatory agencies
  • Lead annual safety plans, provide support and track results throughout the year.
  • Provide leadership, coordination and technical expertise in the areas of health and safety and support the site in training and developmental requirements.
  • Responsible for coordinating safety audits and ensuring completion of action items.
  • Ensure accurate and timely safety reporting, investigation and follow up.
  • Visible and credible leader on the mill production floor that partners with department leaders and associates to improve site safety, including new employee onboarding & training as well as contractor selection, orientation and safety management.
  • Be a role model for safety on and off the job.
  • Owns the coordination and delivery of annual and new employee training.
  • Maintains comprehensive working knowledge of OHS regulations, codes, and standards i.e. CSA, NFPA; Building Code company policies, and procedures, acts in the capacity of site advisor.
  • Administrates company safety/environmental management systems, programs and continuous improvement objectives.
  • Manages the environmental portfolio, owns the site chemical and hazardous waste management activities; act in capacity of SDS administrator.
  • Actively identify hazards, evaluate controls and practices in the workplace by:
  • Accountable for the completion of job task inventory assessments; critical task and job safety analysis; risk ranking of activities and recommending continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Implementation of safe work practices/safe reliable methods, lockout procedures and program documents.
  • Conducting workplace observations, interacting with and engaging associates in hazard assessment, recognition and control activities.
  • Owns the site chemical and hazardous waste management activities; act in capacity of 3E administrator.
  • Owner of the site incident investigation program. Working with the site leadership team and associates to develop plans to prevent similar incidents. Implement corrective actions and monitor effectiveness
  • Initiatives the management of change; notification of change processes; enter notification to generate work orders
  • Leads the development of the unit safety plan; supports execution to achieve results.
  • Actively support the Grande Prairie Lumber Safety Committee.
  • Regularly attends team safety meetings, departmental meetings
  • Records/statistics manager, utilize and maintain data tracking systems, provide trend analysis.
  • Act as a resource with respect to contractor management
  • Acts in capacity of fire safety supervisor
  • Leads both internal and external audit activities, safety and environmental. Maintains COR certification, WCB claims management.
  • Joint disability management program administration.
  • Manages the worksite inspection program.
  • Assess worksite conditions and practices: by completing regular worksite inspections; formal and informal; maintain accurate records of worksite inspections and initiate corrective actions to mitigate risks and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Key stakeholder in capital project support.
  • Audiometric and fit testing administrator.
  • Attend conferences, special events; coordinates recognition activities.
  • Computer skills are required; use of Microsoft Office applications as well as other software programs.
  • Performance management, staff development.
  • Actively participate in professional development opportunities as required.
  • Other administrative duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Prefer a Bachelor degree in Occupational Health and Safety or related field.
  • Demonstrated 3-5 years of experience working in the safety field of manufacturing.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, verbal and electronic communications skills.
  • Strong planning, organizational and time management skills.
  • Critical thinker with advanced problem-solving skills.
  • Action orientated with strong work ethic, good judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated results in achieving and sustaining business goals.
  • Preference to experience in Microsoft office suite and SharePoint.
  • Preference to ability & accreditation to provide safety training.
  • Preference to knowledge of business and financial concepts.
  • Group facilitation and training experience is a definite asset.
  • Ability to adopt to behavior consistent with Grande Prairie Lumbers safety vision and values, policy and site principles.
Career Path/Progression Implications:

The ideal candidate will have completed post-secondary education in health & safety and have obtained their CRSP designation, along with leadership skill development in the areas of people, reliability, cost and environmental.
