Quality Control Supervisor

Taan is committed to creating a successful forest business and economy on Haida Gwaii based on the management principles of the Strategic Land Use Agreement. The underlying goal is to maximize the benefits from the forest resource on Haida Gwaii and for the Haida Nation. Specifically, manage for long term sustainability, increase the number of local logging and manufacturing jobs on Haida Gwaii, extract the best value possible from the areas harvested, and manage the business prudently and effectively.

The Position

Reporting directly to the General Manager and working with Taan's Log Manager safety will always be your priority.

You will be responsible for:

  • Overseeing the management, scaling and quality at Taan's dryland sorts on Haida Gwaii.
  • Including Ministry regulations and acts at the sort
  • Improving and implementing Taan Sort and log handling Procedures;
  • Ensuring sort and grade specs are met
  • Boom cutoff auditing
  • Visiting Taan harvest areas to review and ensure:
  • bucking specifications,
  • proper log handling and quality
  • maximum value from log

You will be based out of Taan's Skidegate office requiring travel to Taan's operations throughout Graham, Moresby and Louise Islands on Haida Gwaii with periodic travel during auditing of domestic market barge deliveries

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

Self-starter: Ability to set weekly priorities for meeting Taan's quality targets in the various phases of operations: falling, dryland, and the deliveries of our log sorts to market

Communication: Strong interpersonal skills to provide on going coaching to contract operators from fallers to boom man.

Analytical: Identify areas of improvement in the various operations and create plan to execute the solutions

Leadership: Working within a team, spearheading changes in quality practices

Training, Education And Experience

  • Scaling ticket an asset-Regulation knowledge of falling, dryland operations, and log transportation
  • Falling training an asset
  • Coastal market log sort specifications
  • Computer knowledge: excel, netscale or similar scaling programs
  • Experience and knowledge of First Nations/Haida culture

Location

Skidegate, Haida Gwaii.

Regular travel will be required throughout Haida Gwaii and occasionally the mainland.
