JOB DESCRIPTION

As a key member of the Capital Projects team, the Projects Manager, Capital Projects is responsible for leading activities related to the safe, timely, efficient and effective execution of approved capital projects. The Project Manager will ensure that project cost assumptions are accurate and achievable, projects remain on scope and any variances from scope are reported quickly. The Capital Projects Manager will ensure that projects are well planned and implemented and project management systems support a sensible approach which is easily managed and understood. The Manager, Capital Projects will ensure that projects are completed such that the underlying physical objectives are achievable and will remain engaged as necessary to ensure project objectives are achieved.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure that all stakeholders recognize that safety is to be a primary focus of all projects and that those directly involved with the project perform all duties in compliance with safety standards established by the Company and regulation.
  • Follow a reliable and transparent process in the execution of projects, including developing project specifications, vendor and contractor selection, equipment and service quotations, selection and purchasing.
  • Work with and develop a strong business relationship with selected vendors/suppliers and contractors to ensure the reliable execution of company projects.
  • Interface with Divisional Management to ensure that project alternatives are adequately evaluated as part of the project planning phase.
  • Interface with Divisional Management in the execution of Capital Projects to limit disruption to divisional activities during project implementation.
  • Be conversant with and follow any and all guidelines and/or policies pertaining to purchasing, vendor selection, and the expenditure of money or influence as a result of the position, seeking advice from the General Manager, Capital Projects where response in a particular situation is unclear.
  • Remain current on technological developments occurring in the industry and reliably communicate and investigate applications of technology which may be relevant to the Company’s success.
  • Work closely with assigned financial personnel to provide accurate project costing and ensure that approved capital projects remain on budget. Immediately bring to the attention of leadership all cost variances which occur during the life of the project.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Post-secondary degree in Wood Products Processing or Engineering or a combination of education and relevant experience.
  • 10 years’ experience in a wood processing/manufacturing engineering or maintenance environment with an additional five years of project management experience is preferred
  • Expert knowledge of sawmill manufacturing methodologies
  • Well-developed financial management skills
  • Well-developed communication skills, solid negotiation, conflict resolution, leadership and people management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage key business relationships
  • Able to identify key issues, creatively and strategically overcome internal challenges or obstacles.
  • Ability to analyze complex problems and develop innovative and strategic solutions with a customer / client focus.
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills including the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to develop, maintain and influence strong internal and external relationships, working in partnership with various stakeholders.
