Chaleur Sawmills, based in Belledune NB, is the result of a dream and the work of four local entrepreneurs, who along with a group of dedicated employees, built the company from its inception in 1994. Completely automated, the sawmill produces 172 million board feet per year, with raw material from both private wood lots and crown land.  The lumber is marketed throughout North America, with the majority destined for the US Eastern Seaboard, by rail, and distributed by truck to the New England States and Canada.  Chaleur Sawmills employs close to 200 people on the site.

The Sawmill is seeking a Power Engineer (class 4 or 3) to join their team.  Successful applicants will be shared between the boiler operations and general labor assignments (i.e.: flagman) depending on operational requirements.

This is an hourly position, working various shift schedules (days and nights; 9 hours and 12 hour shifts).

Role Overview:

  • Work in manufacturing area in a safe, effective and productive manner, while working collaboratively as part of the operating team under supervision of a Forman (Chief Engineer).
  • Maintain and troubleshoot all area-specific equipment to optimize performance to meet production targets. Issue work requests, safe work permits, perform equipment isolations.
  • Perform process & equipment condition monitoring including sampling, testing & analysis. Complete area operations record such as routine readings, volume balances, log sheets, required reports.
  • Participate in the development, review and revision of Safe Operating Procedures. Follow safe operating and chemical handling procedures and ensure environmental impact.
  • Report all safety observations, near misses and incidents. Participate, safety meetings.

Our ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Minimum Power Engineering Certificate (4th Class with possibility of attaining 3rd Class)
  • Ideally, a Power Engineering Certificate (3rd Class)
  • Physical ability to perform duties, climb ladders and work at heights or in confined spaces.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player within the department and other department employees.
  • Understanding of safe work practices and safety regulations.
  • Quality workmanship at required speeds with good planning and organizational abilities.
  • Monitor and inspect plant equipment.
