We intend to hire an experienced PLANNING FORESTER as soon as possible. This is a new position for Haliburton Forest, reflecting the significant growth in our forest products business.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Primarily responsible for the development of forest management plans for the >250,000 acres of private lands that we own and manage across Ontario.
  • Additional responsibilities will include the following:
    • o Using GIS to create base inventory maps and model inputs, assess target harvest areas, forest composition, habitat availability, and other variables.
    • o Drafting text and tables to effectively communicate forest management objectives, strategies, policies, and forecasts in plans and related documents.
    • o Integrate forest economics and financial analyses into forest management models, tools, and decision-making processes.
    • o Contribute to other initiatives such as applied silvicultural research, systems improvements, product recovery, business development, and tourism operations.
  • Location is flexible and remote work is possible, but candidates located in or around the Huntsville or Haliburton regions will be preferred.
  • The successful candidate will be capable of travelling regularly within central and northeastern Ontario, for field visits to the forests that we own and manage.

 QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

  • Registered Professional Forester designation, or ability to achieve such a designation within 18 months of accepting the position.
  • Bachelor’s degree in forestry or a related natural resources discipline.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and professionalism.
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize complex values and data.
  • Experience with forest management planning and plan development.
  • Competence with forest management modelling programs.
  • Experience managing and manipulating GIS datasets, remote sensing outputs, or other inventory data.
  • An excellent understanding of silviculture and forest management operations in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence and/or Boreal forest regions.
  • Experience with the requirements of Forest Stewardship Council certification, or a similar third-party certification scheme, will be considered an asset.

Experience with the evaluation or administration of forest-based carbon offset programs or conservation easements will be considered an asset.

Compensation

Compensation will be determined based on the experience of the candidate. Similar to all positions with Haliburton Forest & Wild Life Reserve and its subsidiaries, unlimited recreational access to the 100,000 acres of private land owned and managed by Haliburton Forest & Wild Life Reserve.
