Optimization and Control Specialist (Forestry, Logging & Mill Operations)

JOB DESCRIPTION 

Western Forest Products is seeking an Optimization and Control Specialist. The Optimization and Control Specialist is integral to the manufacturing process and key to ensuring the maximum value and consistent quality in our products. Initial focus will be on the automatic lumber grading system in the planer mill with an eventual transition into the efficient operation of all optimization equipment for the site.

This position is located at the Alberni Pacific Sawmill Division, Port Alberni.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership in all aspects of safety and environmental stewardship by demonstrating and ensuring the adherence of company safety and sustainability processes and procedures.
  • Assist in systems controls, computer-based optimization, and sawmill/planer mill procedures & methods.
  • Provide support to ensure reliable process settings and methods to reduce downtime, waste and manufacturing costs to improve product quality.
  • Trains all teams in the planer mill/sawmill regarding order file, products, and grade decisions.
  • Work with sales team and customers to meet customer grade and quality expectations
  • Responsible for the day to day operation of scanning and optimization equipment.
  • Work periodic shift work as relief foreman and other duties as required.
  • Work with contractor and Company personnel to drive positive change with respect to operational safety, quality, and productivity.
  • Efficiently manages and coordinates plant optimization operations to ensure timely and targeted delivery of optimization targets as forecasted to maximize margins for the mill.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience:

  • 3-5 years experience
  • Post-secondary education in Wood Products Processing or Forestry related field or a related discipline.

Skills, knowledge and Required Competencies:

  • Lumber grading and/or tally ticket certification considered an asset. Must be will to attain lumber grading ticket if the candidate has not done so already.
  • Comprehensive Computer Skills with MS Suite of products, especially excel
  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical skills, critical thinking capability, strong business acumen
  • Previous experience in quality control, sawmill, and or planer mill supervision preferred.
  • High degree of initiative and appreciation for excellence.
  • Lucidyne grader experience an asset.

Required Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent safety focus and Understanding of OH&S Regulations and loss prevention practices
  • Ability to learn and master various optimizations systems
  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated drive to achieve production goals and targets
