Operations Forester (Forester)

AFM’s eastern and central Maine district has an opening for an Operations Forester position reporting to the District Manager with a field office in Milford.  The position is responsible for timber harvest preparation and contract administration duties for client managed properties.  Timber harvest preparation duties include harvest area and road reconnaissance, field layout, and application of silvicultural prescriptions. Contract administration duties focus on monitoring contractor harvesting, and road construction and maintenance activities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS in Forestry or commensurate level of technical experience in field forestry operations

  • Experience in forest operations

  • Working knowledge of GPS devices and GIS applications (will train specific applications for this job)

  • Working knowledge of water quality protection through best management practices (BMP’s) and State regulations (will train specific regulatory requirements for this job)

  • Familiarity with northeastern US tree species and silvics

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word

  • Maine forester license or ability to obtain license in the first two years of employment

  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record

Work Environment

  • Significant time working alone in remote forestlands accessed by private unimproved woods roads 

  • Long periods of outdoor work including extreme weather conditions (proper dress required)

  • Must be skilled with orienteering and short term survival skills

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

  • Forestry operations (road and harvest reconnaissance, refine silvicultural prescriptions, and land management activities) 

  • Contract administration (road construction and maintenance, timber harvesting)

  • Employ established protocols for the development of plans, implementation of timber harvest and road construction projects, and other associated duties

  • Provide field administration of timber product preparation to market specifications
