This position provides onsite environmental program support to the Fort Jackson Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Division, Forestry Branch in areas such as silviculture, wildland fire management, and forest resource data inventory, measurement, and analysis. As a member of the Forestry Branch, the candidate will assist with efforts to manage the forest of Fort Jackson applying knowledge of silvicultural methods and techniques, ecosystem management, and prescribed fire in a longleaf pine ecosystem.

Job Description and Requirements:

  • Implementation of timber management activities specific to individual sites, including site preparation (mechanical and chemical), prescribed burning, reforestation, herbaceous weed control, and other timber stand improvements, as required.
  • Assist with the development and execution of the Fort Jackson Integrated Natural Resources Management Plan, in particular the prescribed fire plan;
  • Post-burn evaluation and data collection to meet reporting requirements;
  • Perform timber harvest inspection and inventory to prepare for restoration, fuelwood, and other types of thinning harvests;
  • Cruise, mark, and inventory timber prior to sale using a handheld data recorder and forest inventory software program to generate timber sale data;
  • Identify, locate, and mark property lines and management zones;
  • GPS/GIS capability to create maps of timber sales, prepare timber sale information, and manage forest inventory geo-database;
  • Secondary responsibilities may include flora and fauna survey, habitat assessment and restoration, and monitoring to support compliance with the Endangered Species Act.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Forestry, Natural Resources Management, or related field of study;
  • 1 - 3 years of relevant work experience is preferred;
  • Be able to perform physical tasks in variable weather conditions and operate equipment such as ATVs with powered torch, farm tractors, weed eaters, brush saws, and chainsaws, among others;
  • Candidate must be a U.S Citizen and be able to pass a background security investigation (valid driver's license and original copy of birth certificate required).

Compensation

Salary Range: $41,000.00 - $45,000.00
