Natural Resource Manager (Management & Executives)

Examples of Duties:Under general supervision, administers a natural resources management program in the Department of Environmental Protection and Resource Management.

  • Provides policy guidance and recommends departmental goals and objectives to protect natural resources.
  • Plans and coordinates the development of environmental regulations to ensure non-duplication with State and Federal regulations.
  • Supervises professional and support staff.
  • Determines nature and scope of projects and makes appropriate assignments. Reviews completed projects for technical accuracy and conformance with departmental policy.
  • Researches and develops automated data management and information systems for use throughout the department.
  • Works with contractors and representatives of other agencies on behalf of the department.
  • Meets with business and community organizations, representatives of other government agencies, and the general public to address and resolve issues of environmental concern.
  • Provides detailed and summary reports of program activities to supervisors and other agencies as required.

Performs other related duties as required.

Preferred Qualifications for Natural Resource Manager - Forestry Management

  • Knowledge of forestry, including planting, growing and maintaining trees in a forest and/or urban setting.
  • Experience in identifying, planning and managing reforestation projects.
  • Skill in identifying, writing and managing grant proposals.
  • Ability to develop new programs and initiatives related to natural resource protection and/or restoration.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State and local water quality issues related to NPDES MS4 permit, Maryland Forest Conservation Act and TMDL's.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in a physical, biological, or environmental science, geography, planning, or a related field, plus at least six years' professional experience in a planning, science, or related field, one year of which was in a supervisory capacity.

(Education beyond a bachelor's degree in one of the areas listed may be substituted on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of four years for the required non-supervisory experience.)

Licenses and Certificates
Some positions may require registration as a Professional Sanitarian in the State of Maryland at the time of application.

Physical and Environmental Conditions
The work of this classification is essentially sedentary but may include occasional walking, standing, and/or other limited physical activities. Some duties may require occasional travel between work sites.

Applicants selected for an appointment to a position in Baltimore County must successfully complete a physical examination and drug screen and an employment background investigation, including, but not limited to a criminal background, education, and fingerprint check.
