SUMMARY

Reporting to the President, the National Panel and OSB Manager is responsible for all Panel and OSB products for CanWel Building Materials Division. The ideal candidate has a strong background in negotiating and purchasing commodity products – specifically Plywood and OSB, and utilizes hedging to obtain the best margins for the branches. This position is also considered the “go-to person” for Panel expertise in the company.

EXPECTED CONTRIBUTIONS

  • Negotiates all major Panel purchases from suppliers across Canada and the United States.
  • Makes purchases after accurately assessing market information and utilizes hedging in the purchase of Commodity Panel Products.
  • Gives direction to branches for smaller buys.
  • Consults management on market and business direction.
  • Works with pricing model to generate appropriate margins for branches.
  • Builds relationships with suppliers and external/internal customers.
  • Provides market intelligence to branches for development of annual business plans.
  • Helps to achieve objectives of regional business plans.
  • Provides guidance and coaching to commodity traders in all branches.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • 10 years of experience buying and selling Plywood and OSB products
  • Strong understanding of Plywood and OSB markets
  • Understanding of freight (rail and trucks) logistics
  • Understand importing of products to Canada
  • Ability to read market signals and intelligence and use this information to make decisions
  • Ability to explain to internal traders how to establish priorities in their regions
  • Ability to analyze and manage risk
  • Strongly developed negotiation skills and experience
  • Ability to establish rapport with others and build relationships with suppliers and external/internal customers that are beneficial in achieving work related goals
  • Self-starter who will pursue a specific course of action while exhibiting high motivation and a sense of urgency
  • Proven problem solving skills with the ability to gather and assess information, formulate and evaluate alternatives and propose a recommended solution
  • Ability to communicate to peers and management clearly and in a timely manner on sales activities
  • Strong PC skills using Microsoft Office products, as well as tools such as JDE Distribution system (online order entry) and Qlikview (reporting system)

EDUCATION

  • High school graduation
  • Post-secondary education in business or economics
