Job Description

Seymour Manufacturing Company, a part of Seymour Midwest LLC, is a family-owned, global supplier to the hand-tools market, striving to delight our customers and outperform our competition by “Doing the Right Thing”. We are currently seeking a Mill Manager to play a key role in the production of hickory handle blanks for our replacement handle portion of the business.

Summary

The MillManager will direct and manage all sawmill operations in the areas of safety, production, maintenance, and quality while striving to continuously improve all areas of mill performance. In addition to, inspecting, scaling, and purchasing hickory logs from local suppliers.

Key Responsibilities:

General and Task Management

  • Maintain an adequate log inventory to accomplish sawing requirements.
  • Monitor overall plant performance for production and quality standards.
  • Monitor sawing of lumber to ensure logs are used for their highest and best use and waste is minimized.
  • Inspect lumber production to ensure the equipment is maintained and sawing is done in a manner to maximize hickory blank production in the proper quantities and dimensions.
  • Maintain existing plant facilities and equipment; replace or make adjustments to plant facilities and equipment when necessary.
  • Maintain a Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) schedule focused on eliminating or reducing downtime, ensuring equipment is maintained by scheduling preventative maintenance, and lead the team to deliver effectively.
  • Provide technical expertise to the team.
  • Ensure the safe operation of the mill by training team members in safe practices and eliminating or controlling safety hazards. Be aware of TOSHA regulations and maintain mill in accordance with all local, state, and federal rules and regulations.

People Management

  • Hiring and orienting new employees with assistance of Seymour Human Resources Manager.
  • Provide direction, development and leadership to mill team members.
  • Enforce company policies, mill organization and housekeeping cleanliness among mill personnel.
  • Review, implement and update company records through the use of annual reviews, frequent feedback, and training software.

Financial and Budget Control

  • Establish, track, and report operating expenditures.
  • Manage spending and cost drivers for supplies, tooling, utilities and other overhead cost elements.
  • Control and minimize labor overtime and repair expenses.

Relationship Management

  • Encourage and foster a sense of high, positive morale among the team.
  • Provide leadership and training to accomplish the company goals and objectives.
  • Interact with team members and cooperate with other functional areas.
  • Work as part of the Management team to share ideas and improve operation, recommending, supporting and implementing continuous improvement activities.

Skills and Attributes:

  • Demonstrate excellent trouble shooting skills by providing a logical approach to problem solving in order to identify and overcome complex problems.
  • Strong organizational, problem solving, analytical and decision making skills to effectively manage and execute projects.
  • Proven ability to respectfully manage a diverse workforce.
  • Basic computer skills in MS Excel and Outlookis a plus.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact with, lead, and influence team members at multiple levels of the organization.
  • Ability to function in a fast-paced, team environment.

Qualifications and Experience Levels:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 5+ years of related management work experience in a hardwood sawmill environment desired.
