The Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment has an exciting management opportunity in the Forest Service Branch located in Prince Albert.  As Manager of the Planning, Policy and Protection Unit you will support the sustainable growth of Saskatchewan’s forest sector by leading the development of forest policy, the implementation of forest management plans and the protection of our forests from insects and disease. You will ensure that forest policy, planning and protection programs support the Ministry’s shift to a more results-based, service-oriented, regulatory approach to attaining desired forest management outcomes.  We are committed to high citizen and client satisfaction through workplace excellence, continuous improvement and innovation. 
The Forest Service is seeking an experienced manager to lead a team of staff who are responsible for regulating forest industry operations and ensuring compliance on Crown forest lands.  Your leadership in this position will: provide oversight and strategic direction for the review and approval of forest management plans and the monitoring of their ongoing implementation; shape the development of forest policy under The Forest Resources Management Act (FRMA), FRMA Regulations, and theEnvironmental Code and associated standards; develop policy that integrates forest management plans with boreal landscape ecological processes; encourage policies and strategies that will help mitigate the effects of a changing climate on Saskatchewan’s boreal forest and that will help it adapt to future conditions; and provide oversight of the provincial program for protection of the forest from emerging threats posed by insects and diseases. You will provide forest policy direction and forest management expertise to other government ministries, and will support senior ministry staff on forest management and policy issues. 
The successful candidate will be responsible to take a broad-scale view of unit programs and processes and be consistently challenged to develop and implement long and short term strategies that achieve government’s focus on efficiency, accountability and results-based regulatory requirements. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience with forest management planning and policy development and a fundamental understanding of how forest biology and ecological processes influence forest practices and policy at both the local and landscape levels. Your experience with policy development and implementation is tempered with a strong understanding of the need to balance environmental, social and economic values within the sector.  
The ideal candidate will possess a graduate degree in Forestry, Resource Management or related field as well as significant demonstrated leadership experience managing and supervising staff. In addition, the ideal candidate should be able to demonstrate: an ability to lead, support, create and sustain an environment that enables staff to achieve results and to develop and build organizational capacity for the future; knowledge and understanding of environmental and resource management statutes and regulations, business planning, accountability processes and risk management; an ability to effectively manage fiscal, human and information management and technology resources; an ability to lead strategic initiatives, manage change and achieve positive results; and an ability to communicate effectively and collaborate strategically with a wide variety of stakeholders, clients and regulated communities and balance the needs and interests of these diverse groups.

Compensation

Salary Range: $7,285 - $9,469 Monthly
