Lowbed Driver (Forestry, Logging & Mill Operations)

POSITION PURPOSE:

With minimal direct supervision, will operate a lowboy on public roads and highways as well as on private logging roads to transport and deliver equipment to job sites.  May be required to load and unload equipment.  This is a full-time position, based out of the Camp 1 facility located in Shelton, WA.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (other duties may be assigned)

A Lowbed Driver must be able to perform all functions to accomplish the primary purpose of the job.

  • Haul logging and road construction equipment using a lowbed tractor and trailer.  Lowbed Driver must also have working knowledge of the different types of equipment hauled (e.g. excavator, dozer, grader, yarder, shovel logger, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of jeep and tag axels.
  • Experience with obtaining oversized and overweight vehicle permit applications and requirements.
  • Experience with highway and off highway hauling (state/federal regulations).
  • Climb on, over and around a company vehicle in order to perform Pre Trip and Post Trip vehicle inspections as well as to secure loads.
  • Lift truck hoods, product or equipment and tools necessary to perform inspection, repair, loading and unloading of trucks.
  • Perform light preventative and routine maintenance to vehicle; coordinate with shop on repairs.
  • Wash truck, clean truck cab, climb up and down truck washing facilities; Keep vehicle, cab interior and exterior clean and free from buildup, stones, debris and loose objects.
  • Work outdoors for extended periods during all seasons of the year.
  • Operate the vehicle in a safe, lawful and courteous manner at all times.
  • Read road signs and follow written or verbal directions.
  • Maintain contact with appropriate managers by radio, GPS or telephone to inform them of delays, problems, or unusual situations.
  • Maintain and keep any operator logs, as required, and or other documentation required by regulations or the company.
  • Maintain a good attitude, work well with others, and have a good safety record.
  • Must be alert to potential hazards and respond appropriately.
  • Must have knowledge of environmental laws.
  • Must have the ability to prioritize assignments and make decisions with time constraints.

  • Must be able to manage multiple tasks effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to work on rough, steep, uneven ground with logs and other obstacles.
  • Must be able to fill in for other team members during temporary absences, including the safe and efficient operation of machinery.
  • Must be able to build/maintain both temporary and permanent road systems.
  • Knowledge of rock pits and the ability to perform work safely.
  • Must be able to perform minor service, fuel and maintenance.
  • Must wear all required safety equipment and comply with all safety rules and regulations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have valid CDL Class A Washington State driver’s license, and any applicable endorsements, and pass and maintain DOT physical requirements. 
  • Must have and maintain an appropriate Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
  • Current First Aid Card.
  • Current P/EVO Certification.
  • At least 5 years’ experience operating heavy equipment and mechanical work experience.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • This position is located in Shelton, WA.
  • Works primarily (90%+) of the time in the field under varying topography and climatic extremes.
  • Ability to orient, climb, and traverse steep rugged, densely vegetated terrain on a consistent basis in in sometimes harsh weather conditions for long periods of time.
  • Must have the ability to see distance and detail with accuracy.
  • Must have ability to work independently and without immediate supervision in remote areas.
  • Works in conditions that may expose employee wildlife encounters, poison oak and/or insect bites.
  • Mandatory travel to remote company locations.
  • Must maintain punctual and regular attendance and present appropriate professional appearance at all times.
  • Requires the use of standard safety equipment in regulation with Green Diamond.
  • This position may be exposed to pesticides.
