Logging Supervisor (Korbel, CA)

POSITION PURPOSE:

Directs assigned logging operations to assure the safe and efficient movement of logs from the stump to the customer.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (other duties may be assigned)

• Controls costs to achieve or improve on annual plan targets and long term cost- reduction goals.
• Achieves production targets in a safe, cost-efficient manner.
• Assures competent adequate staffing in cooperation with the logging superintendent and Human Resources. Interprets and implements labor agreement.
• Directs harvest operations in accordance with Timber Harvest Plan (THP) requirements and other environmental laws.
• Directs the work of 31 Green Diamond hourly union employees during the logging season.
• Coordinates with appropriate company personnel to assure accurate efficient scheduling of operations.
• Monitors trucking efficiency in operating area and recommend improvement opportunities.
• Plans and orders rigging.  Assures equipment is operated to maximize production and minimize maintenance.  Cooperates with the shop supervisor to assure maximum availability. Make recommendations to improve performance.
• Assures that logging operations maximize resource recovery and produce properly manufactured and sorted logs.
• Communicates closely and maintains cooperation with the Korbel logging and forestry operations to include IFM, Wildlife, Botany, Aquatic, Geology departments, California State Agency Representatives Federal Agencies County and local governments and adjacent landowners.
• Performs productive performance management reviews (written and verbal), for salaried staff, according to program, or give effective constructive feedback to hourly production employees.
• Assures a safe workplace.  Takes personal initiative and an aggressive responsibility to insure ongoing safe behaviors through implementation and active participation in the company safety program with a goal of no recordable accidents.  Develops, implements, and facilitates safety elements to support the Divisions Injury and Illness Prevention Plan (IIPP).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

• 5 years’ experience in logging operations including planning and implementation of harvest plans.
• Valid California driver’s license.
• Compliance with regulatory agencies.
• Demonstrates attention to production goals and cost analysis.
• Ability to be highly motivated and self-directed.
• Exhibits strong leadership skills. Works with integrity, trust and commitment, setting an example for others. 
• The ability to effectively train, lead and motivate a staff or crew with a focus on safety and goal achievement.

Desired:

• Bachelor's degree in forestry, engineering, or equivalent experience.
• Ability to operate and maintain various types of heavy equipment.
• Computer skills in Word and excel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

• Field work in addition to a normal office environment with moderate noise levels, occasional lifting, regular walking, sitting, bending, twisting, standing and reaching.
• Mandatory travel to remote company locations.
• Ability to tour logging operations, attend training and company functions.
• Ability to perform consistent work on a PC.
• Must maintain punctual and regular attendance and present appropriate professional appearance at all times.
• Requires the use of standard safety equipment in regulation with GDRCo.
• Ability to orient, climb, and traverse steep rugged, densely vegetated terrain on a consistent basis in in sometimes harsh weather conditions for long periods of time.
• Must have the ability to see distance and detail with accuracy.
• Must have good hearing ability.
• Works in conditions that may expose employee wildlife encounters, poison oak and/or insect bites.
• This position is a Physical and Mental Requirement Classification 7.
