Position Title: Log Scaler

Job Location: Collins Hardwood Company LLC, Richwood, West Virginia 

Position Description:

Measures dimensions of each log. Determines total board feet, grade, cordage, or other wood unit. Inspects logs for rot, other defects, deducts estimated waste from total volume, and records results.

Position Responsibilities:

• Evaluate log characteristics and determine grades, using established criteria

• Identify logs of substandard or special grade so that they can be returned to shippers, regraded, recut, or transferred for other processing

• Adapt to changes in the work environment

• Able to deal with frequent change, delay, or unexpected events

• Attendance/Punctuality—Is a must!

• Commit to long hours of work when necessary to reach goals

• Ability to work with others; participate in and create a team environment

• Paint identification marks of specified colors on logs to identify grades or species, using spray cans, or call out grades to log markers.

• Measure log lengths and mark boles for bucking into logs, according to specifications. 

Position Requirements:

• Must be self-motivated with proven ability to work with little supervision

• Accurately identify log species and grades

• Work outside in various and sometimes extreme conditions

• Ability to operate knuckle boom, log loader(s), chainsaw, data recorder, PC, TLO, and talk man/VDTS system

• Other duties as assigned by management
