EACOM is one of the major producers in the Eastern Canadian timber industry. Operations include the manufacturing, marketing and distribution of lumber and wood-based value-added products, and the management of forest resources. EACOM currently owns seven sawmills (5 in Ontario, 2 in Quebec), a remanufacturing facility (Quebec) and a partnership operation in an engineered I joist plant (Ontario) for a total of 1000 employees.

The Company will grow and outperform its competitors by investing in strong assets, including healthy forests, advanced technology and talented people.

We are presently looking to hire a log buyer for our Northeast Ontario Operations (Timmins, Elk Lake, Gogama). The incumbent would be accountable for the full purchase program at each of the three mills acquiring supplies from Crown and private sources. Reporting to the General Manager of Forest Operations and working directly with the mill Woodlands Managers, purchase Crown and private log supplies to meet the needs of the Timmins, Gogama and Elk Lake saw mills, 250 to 300,000 m3/year. 

Job Description:

·         Establish relationships with current Crown and private suppliers for long term contracts to supply available wood to EACOM mills.

·         Investigate and evaluate all opportunities for private sources of wood, including but not limited to large land holdings, individual land holdings, mining company holdings and municipal ownership. Negotiate and complete agreements to purchase all identified opportunities.

·         Search land holding titles at Ontario Land Registry Offices to pursue all available private sources of logs.

·         Cruise standing timber for assessment of quantity and quality and purchase opportunities.

·         Monitor purchase wood suppliers production and quality. Develop delivery schedules with the receiving mills.

·         Establish log sort yards.

·         Develop relationships with other users of the forest for the effective use of the resource and trade log supplies for the benefit of each party.

·         Market the incidental volumes of hardwood that are not utilized by EACOM.

Requirements:

·         Preferably have Forestry or Business education or equivalent experience.

·         Minimum 8 years of relevant experience.

·         Very good understanding of logging quality, value and costs characteristics.

·         Good understanding of sawmill log breakdown and recovery.

·         Familiar with all forestry related government laws, regulations and policies.

·         Ability to walk and assess standing timber for quantity and quality.

·         Computer skills required include knowledge of Outlook, Word & Excel.

·         Valid driver license.

·         The candidate should be available to travel with overnight stays on required on a regular basis.
