JOB DESCRIPTION

 Western Forest Products is recruiting for a Log Buyer.

The Log Buyer is responsible for procuring logs on the domestic market to meet internal consumption demands. Reporting to the Manager Domestic Sales and Purchases, the Log Buyer helps develop and implement the annual log procurement and delivery plan, ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements and working closely with internal and external stakeholders to ensure a balance of supply and demand.

  • Demonstrate safety performance by ensuring adherence to company safety processes and procedures.

Financial Performance

  • Recommend effective and innovative strategies to drive cost efficiencies within the Fibre Supply team.
  • Work with Logistics to utilize appropriate delivery methods that meet customer requirements at the lowest possible cost;

Leadership

  • Provide leadership by promoting the principles of LEAN in all tasks and assignments;
  • Protect Western’s reputation by managing issues, engaging support from senior leadership as required;

Core Responsibilities

  • Determine the log requirements to be purchased for the upcoming fiscal year, detailing the species,diameter class, and corresponding volumes;
  • Cruise, inspect, and value logs from specific sellers;
  • Build positive working relationships with all 3rd Party Landowners, Log Buyers, Timber Operators and Company Managers to promote Western as the customer of choice
  • Monitor local and regional log markets to assess delivered log values and delivery costs
  • Complete formal bids for log purchases, consistent with the Annual Log Purchase Plan
  • Prepare Requests for Bids, as applicable for log sales, consistent with the Annual Log Purchase Plan
  • Negotiate favorable terms with sellers of 3rd Party logs
  • Monitor actual log flows (shipments) from purchase suppliers to ensure compliance with quality requirements and agreed shipping schedules
  • Develop new log sources and consumers to ensure a balance of supply and demand
  • Assist with establishment and maintenance a log quality program with all 3rd party log suppliers that will maximize sawmill throughput, overrun, and grade yield
  • Other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience

  • Post-secondary degree in business, forestry or related subject
  • Scaling Ticket an asset
  • 4 years log purchasing experience

Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies

  • An understanding of lumber shipping and container loadings.
  • An understanding of coastal harvesting practices
  • A strong understanding of international trade & economics.
  • Knowledge of all of the applications and grade requirements for lumber
  • Proven track record of delivering against stretch sales goals
  • Extensive knowledge of Western Red Cedar, Whitewood and Yellow Cedar market segments, sales channels and customers.
  • Log grading and scaling experience an asset
  • Quality Control experience an asset
