Fruit Growers Supply Company (FGS) is a supply cooperative organized in 1907 that provides Sunkist Growers and others in the agricultural community most of the materials and resources required to grow, harvest, package and ship citrus and other agricultural products.  

Headquartered in Valencia, California, FGS operations encompass manufacturing, distribution, retail, and forest management in 15 locations in California, Arizona, Oregon and Washington. 

We currently have an excellent opportunity for a Log Buyer / By-Products Salesperson.  Working from our Yreka, California location, the successful candidate will be responsible formanaging log procurement activities and will directly purchase, scale, and measure cut logs, coordinating their transportation and delivery.  Will acquire and maintain a customer base for all by-products (chips/sawdust/bark), negotiate terms, and monitor quality. Advises the Sawmill Manager on market conditions, inventory management and expanding list of product buyers.  

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Work closely with the Sawmill Manager to manage the P&L through established KPI’s and department specific budget 
  • Develops, cultivates and maintains long-term relationships and negotiates procurement agreements with wood industry suppliers, vendors and regulatory officials 
  • Develops and manages Forest Service stewardship programs and sales 
  • Works closely with FGS timber operations and coordinates efforts to optimize overall system performance 
  • Coordinates with individual managers/supervisors at the mill to determine immediate and long-term log supply needs 
  • Prepares, implements and manages purchasing and procurement plans to achieve procurement goals 
  • Provides input into quality standards, policy, pricing and guidelines for log grading and purchasing, and manages operations to insure goals and guidelines are adhered to 
  • Stays abreast of local, state, federal or other regulatory, environmental, legal or transportation rules and requirements and operates to comply with all applicable procedures 
  • Coordinates and manages the sale of veneer or unusable logs to outside customers 
  • Instruct loggers with all cutting rules and log quality control expectations 
  • Maintains working relationship with various transportation companies for the by-products
Employment Requirements:

Education and Experience 

  • Four year college degree highly desirable or equivalent experience 
  • At least five years of previous experience in Log Procurement 
  • Broad-based knowledge of forestry practices and procedures, logging and timber harvesting practices, softwood markets and trends, wood technology and general knowledge of log handling equipment and procedures 

General Skills 

  • Must be proactive, detail oriented and have the ability to manage the details 
  • Must possess strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills; ability to communicate with and influence all levels 
  • Computer literate with Microsoft Office, Fiber Track/Lumber Track, SAP and other office equipment 
  • Ability to organize, prioritize work and multi-task 
  • Ability to make independent, effective decisions

Minimum Experience: 3-5 Years

Minimum Education: BA/BS/Undergraduate
