Position: Lead Forestry Technician Overview: Lomakatsi Restoration Project (www.lomakatsi.org) is looking for qualified Forestry Technicians with leadership and project managementskillsetsto join our team of professionals for full time employment. Roles for the successful candidates will fulfill job requirements to: 1) provide oversight of personnel, project management and design; or 2) specialize in implementation oversight, inspections and data management.

Applicants should be skilled to perform variety of essential tasks such as: collecting and managing forest inventory data; timber cruising; layout and marking of restoration-focused commercial thinning projects; interpreting ecologically-based silvicultural prescriptions; supervising and training forest technicians, performing restoration project inspection; oversee regulatory and NEPA compliance and commercial restoration-based timber harvest sub-contractor accountability. The majority of this individual’s work will be done in the field working independently, or with other technical forestry personnel and specialists.

The position is based out of Ashland, Oregon, with projects spanning a three-hour radius and some overnight travel required. 

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES

• BS degree in Forestry or Natural Resources and/or demonstrated equivalent experience

• A minimum of 3 years field work experience in applied forestry

• Competent in the use of technical forestry equipment: GPS/ GIS, navigation, data gathering/processing, Relaskop, compass, increment borer, densitometer, and clinometer

• Project management and personnel supervision experience preferred

• Excellent communication skills

• Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and work performed in a network environment

• Experience with GIS (Esri) preferred

• Ability to work independently and as a member of a team

• Possession of a valid driver’s license

• Ability to orient, navigate and hike in rough terrain using map, compass and GPS

• Ability to identify native trees and shrubs

• Flexibility to work variable hours depending on project needs

Organization Overview-Lomakatsi Restoration Project

Lomakatsi Restoration Project is a non-profit, grassroots organization that develops and implements forest and watershed restoration programs and projects in Oregon and northern California. Our mission is to restore ecosystems and the sustainability of communities, cultures and economies. Since 1995, Lomakatsi has a proven record of success implementing restoration projects across thousands of acres of forests and miles of streams. Restoring ecosystems requires a collaborative community-based approach. We facilitate partnerships and engagement among a diversity of stakeholders. In cooperation with a broad range of partners including federal and state land management agencies, The Nature Conservancy, land trusts, private landowners, watershed councils, city and county governments, and Native American tribes, our work has set precedents on nationally recognized projects.

Lomakatsi provides expertise and capacity in project development, planning, management, finescale ecological treatment design, monitoring, and implementation for ecosystem restoration projects. We integrate restoration practice with science delivery, education and workforce training. Lomakatsi coordinates closely with multiple funding partners and manages a diverse workforce in complex social settings supported by critical community outreach. Restoring ecosystems requires a collaborative community-based approach. We facilitate partnerships and engagement among a diversity of stakeholders.

Lomakatsi employs up to 150 forest and watershed restoration personnel at times, including 16 full-time programmatic, managerial and administrative staff, an in-house 50 person, on-theground workforce, and forestry and restoration operators from the communities where we work. We can accomplish work on 10,000 acres annually. Currently, our work is focused within four landscape scale 10-year stewardship agreements in three national forests and on Medford BLM lands, where restoration work can be conducted within 2 million acres of federal lands. The remainder of our restoration work is accomplished in partnership with private landowners and natural resource agencies through various landscape scale conservation funding program initiatives. Through the operation of 10 programs, our staff of restoration practitioners, ecologists, workforce trainers and educators work to increase community understanding and involvement in forest and watershed restoration.
