Reporting to the Arboricultural Foreman, this is manual work of some complexity and variety involving the performance of semi-skilled tasks entailing the exercise of one or more acquired skills. The duties may involve hazardous working conditions, specialized skills, and limited supervisory responsibility. An employee of this class exercises considerable independence of judgement and action particularly in specialized tasks and the work is checked by a supervisor for the attainment of desired objectives. An incumbent will be responsible for trimming, pruning, and watering a variety of trees using rigging ropes, power saws, and other hand tools; is also responsible to plant, stake, fertilize, mulch, and provide care for trees; will also work to identify and treat trees affected by pests and disease as directed. Performs other related work as required. 

Requirements include up to high school graduation plus considerable knowledge of the practices, methods, tools, materials, and safety precautions used in forestry work including some supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. An incumbent is also required to have considerable knowledge and skill with the safe use of a variety of hand tools and motorized equipment common to forestry work; will possess knowledge of the functions of the Forestry Division including established procedures governing the work and the relationship between the Forestry Division and other divisions within the City of Burnaby; will have the ability to perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled manual tasks requiring the use of independent judgment related to safety. Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia, Class 5, is required. Tree Risk Assessment Qualification is considered an asset. 

Two positions are available. 

Status: Temporary Full Time to October 26, 2018.
