Description: 

The Global Forestry Compliance Director will lead the Company’s responsible wood sourcing strategy by developing and operationalizing the processes used by the Merchant, Sourcing and Compliance teams to ensure a risk-based approach to responsible environmental sourcing.

  • This position will be responsible for identifying and analyzing forestry related risks pertaining to the Company’s domestic and international raw materials sourcing strategies and will verify that raw materials are responsibly sourced throughout the supply chain.

  • This position will also work closely with the Vice President, Compliance and the Company’s Compliance department to provide expertise and direction to maintain strict adherence to the US Lacey Act. 

Primary (Essential) Functions: 

  • Serve as the Company’s subject matter expert on the requirements (laws, regulations, standards) for appropriate forest practices domestic and internationally

  • Maintain knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and standards (existing or impending) relating to product development and vendor management

  • Serve as a resource to the Company’s sourcing team, buyers, supply chain leaders and product suppliers to facilitate the lawful sourcing of raw material

  • Brief/advise buyers on standards issues or changes in regulations that affect their buying strategy.

  • Collaborate with the Compliance Management team to develop a risk based sourcing strategy based on geography, genus/species, and due care/diligence

  • Develop processes used to calculate log yield and timber estimations

  • Maintain knowledge of log grading as well as plywood and MDF manufacturing

  • Identify, maintain working knowledge of and leverage information from 3rd-Party resources regarding timber and logging to be used for actionable risk based practices and processes

  • Research raw material sources (product or supplier based) to gather and record information for evaluation and risk assessment purposes.

  • Perform on-site audits on domestic and international suppliers to verify manufacturing practices and processes

  • Provide metrics and quantitative data relevant to

  • Develop and oversee processes that address responsible sourcing and that validate raw materials used to fill the Company’s orders has documentation for compliance requirements.

  • Support Company’s sustainability program

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Thorough knowledge of log grading, log yield, plywood manufacturing, medium density fiberboard (MDF) manufacturing, and lumber manufacturing processes including grading, planeing, saw-milling, etc.

  • Knowledge of 3rd party resources such as CITES that are designed to serve rating systems and forest certification.

  • Knowledge of domestic and global, legal and regulatory requirements for logging/forestry industry.

  • Knowledge of the U.S. Lacey Act.

  • Experience in wood product operations and production practices.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).

  • SAP experience not required but would be “a plus”.

  • Ability to use sound judgment to make effective decisions within context of compliance and be able to support decisions with facts and details.

  • Must possess excellent analytical, problem solving, critical thinking, and listening skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for presenting information and ideas and responding to questions from peers, managers, product suppliers, and customer.

  • Ability to research and effectively summarize difficult topics including regulatory and operations.

  • Detail oriented; ability to process high volume work load by set deadline with high level of accuracy.

  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and understanding of implications.

  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and manage cross-functional projects, and to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines in fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to demonstrate calmness under pressure.

  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.

  • Ability to communicate in English, required; secondary language skills in Portuguese and/or Chinese, a plus

  • Ability to navigate and travel independently on a domestic and international basis, up to 20%

Education and Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in forestry or related field, required;

  • 7-10 years of related experience in compliance roles, preferred; 5 years minimum, required; or equivalent combination of experience and education

  • Experience in the forestry and wood products industry, required.

  • Experience in wood products manufacturing, preferred.

  • Related compliance experience is a “plus”

Supervision and Decision Making: 

  • This position may directly or indirectly supervise the work of 2-7 associates, including those working outside of the U.S.

  • This position works closely with the senior leadership team to develop, implement and monitor programs and procedures that balance regulatory compliance with business requirements.

Working Conditions: 

  • This position works in typical manufacturing and office environments with moderate noise levels.

  • This position requires international and domestic travel that may include typical forestry locales.

  • Passport required.

Compensation

Wage: $150-$175k plus possible 20% bonus and benefits. Pay relocation. Depending on experience
