GIS Specialist

General Description: Hatfield Consultants requires full-time services for a geographic information systems (GIS) specialist. Contractor will play a technical role in Hatfield’s Geomatics group in North Vancouver. The Geomatics group within Hatfield Consultants provides services to internal project teams and projects, in addition to providing geomatics services directly to a private and public sectors.

The primary role of the GIS specialist will be to provide technical services including GIS data capture and management, geo-processing and spatial analysis, and mapping, and CAD drawing. In addition, field work may be conducted as part of experienced field crews to support environmental projects throughout Western Canada.

Reports to: Geomatics Manager

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Communicate clearly with Hatfield’s environmental specialists regarding map and data analysis requirements.
  • Produce high quality cartographic map products and CAD drawings using ArcMap and CAD for fieldwork planning, reports, and presentations.
  • Conduct data capture, conversion, and translation conforming to topology rules / guidelines.
  • Integrate various vector and raster data sets from multiple sources for inclusion in map products, including satellite imagery.
  • Integrate GPS data and field sampling information into GIS data formats for inclusion in map products.
  • Perform satellite image archive searches and plan new satellite acquisitions requested by internal or external clients.
  • Develop and maintain geodatabases and perform various data management duties such as data storage and cleanup.
  • Develop mobile data collection forms for field programs using Hatfield’s systems.
  • Conduct 3D visualization of development projects using Hatfield’s systems.
  • Comply with Hatfield’s Health and Safety Management Plan, the law, and client health and safety protocols.
  • Comply with Hatfield’s Quality Management Plan and external requirements and regulations.

Competencies:

  • At least three years of experience in ArcGIS v10, including extensions such as Spatial Analyst and 3D Analyst.
  • Experience in spatial data acquisition, manipulation and conversion.
  • Knowledge of GIS data standards, projections and coordinate systems.
  • Knowledge of federal, provincial and global datasets and repositories for GIS data.
  • Experience implementing mobile-base field applications.
  • Experience developing GIS analysis tools with Python.
  • Knowledge and experience of spatial data management, including ESRI geo-databases and RDBMS.
  • Excellent communication skills (i.e., verbal and written).
  • Research and analytical skills (literature research, geomatics data acquisition, compilation, and analysis).
  • General computer skills (MS Office suite, etc.).

Assets:

  • Demonstrated skills in the processing of a range of commercial and freely available optical satellite data.
  • Experience in the use and operation of commercial and open source remote sensing software.
  • Experience developing statistical analysis with R.
  • Experience with visualization software tools.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Must have a B.Sc. in geographical sciences, or related subject.
  • 3 – 5 years of experience or combination of experience/education.
  • Work within a consulting environment that requires flexibility and teamwork.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
