Job Description:
The GIS Analyst position will support the GIS Manager in all aspects of managing the GIS systems and data covering 2.7 Million acres in the Southeastern US and internationally. The position would also provide analysis and support for projects relating to forest planning, inventory and growth & yield and forest productivity. Specific focus will be given to developing the use of remote sensing to improve forest management and forest inventory efficiency and accuracy. The GIS Analyst will also aid in the implementation of ArcServer to enable GIS data access across the organization on various end user platforms.
Duties:
GIS Data Maintenance
- General GIS data maintenance and data editing
- Imagery acquisition and maintenance
- Acquisition due diligence, data migration and GIS data review
- Oversee annual GIS Audit and data quality improvement process
Remote sensing
- Provide support to continue RMS’s use of remote sensed data in developing LAI estimates
- Develop and implement methods to utilize satellite imagery to improve timber cruising efficiency and accuracy, as well as improve GIS data and processes.
- Develop additional methods to leverage imagery to improve GIS data and business processes
Support
- Support of ArcGIS and ArcGIS Online for field and Birmingham users
- Provide GIS analytical support or various corporate projects
Qualifications, Experience, Skills, and Competencies:
- Degree in forestry with emphasis on GIS. GIS degree, certificate, or previous experience with a focus on GIS preferred.
- Experienced with building, managing and maintaining large GIS databases
- Proficient in Microsoft Access and Excel
- Knowledgeable of ESRI data storage formats including advantages and disadvantages of each
- Knowledge of ESRI Geoprocessing tools and methods
- Ability to translate operational problems and needs into GIS work flow
Preferred Skills:
- Understanding and experience in various remote sensing method and analysis
- Proficient in Geoprocessing automation or scripting (Model builder or Python scripting preferred)
- Working knowledge of SQL
- Working knowledge of ArcSDE
- Ability to work with others in a close-knit team environment
- Adaptive to changing roles, responsibilities and priorities
- Ability and desire for continued technical and personal improvement
- Ability and desire to “make a difference” at RMS
