GFR Forestry Consultants is offering a full time GIS analyst position for immediate placement.

We are seeking candidates with a working knowledge of GIS mapping technology and its application in forest land management settings. Responsibilities will include creating maps for harvest and silvicultural activities, management of the company-wide stands training and support of staff, evaluation and suggestions regarding file structure, and database.

Responsibilities:

A summary of the three core areas of responsibility and expected percentage of time required on annual basis are:

Mapping & GIS Support (70%)

Short Range Tasks:

  • Create and finalize maps for requests/projects and prioritize those requests.
  • Review and modify standard map request procedure to improve map creation process.
  • Review and modify new stand creation process.
  • Review and modify uniform stand data nomenclature (ID).
  • Perform heads-up digitization based on aerial photography, topographic maps, digital elevation models, and other forms of remotely-sensed data.
  • Collect and maintain up-to-date third party data (e.g. soils information, county parcel boundaries, aerial imagery, etc.) as needed for quick use in future mapping projects.
  • Provide base dataset of GIS information to ArcMap and QGIS capable foresters.
  • Continuously incorporate updates from foresters into the database.

Long Range Tasks:

  • Continual improvement in process efficiency
  • Assist staff foresters in becoming more independent for basic GIS/Mapping needs
  • Investigate the establishment of a GFR Database with ArcGIS online functionality
  • Customize data to meet the evolving needs of the foresters and clients
  • Analyze database to assess trends and plan future work.

Database Management (20%)

  • Standardize Supporting spatial info (Hydrology, Tract Points, Other roads, Utilities, etc.).
  • Improve data format and contents to add value to future analysis and use. (Certification status, buffer rule implications, Endangered Species potential, operability, access, etc.).
  • Review & maintain quality of added data and update historic data as applicable.
  • Archive & structure historic information to be more easily accessible.
  • Maintain organization of data for various clients.
  • Provide support to complete higher level updates to third party databases.
  • Perform data analysis and queries of data for specific projects.

Field Application (10%)

  • Provide guidance & minimum standards of data collection.
  • Train individuals on efficient techniques for field data collection.
  • Provide basemaps as needed to facilitate using handhelds for tract reconnaissance, harvest layout and cruise plot location

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree; Forest Management or Natural Resource major preferred
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Competency in GIS mapping software management and mapping procedures
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, ArcGIS 10 or higher
