Forestry Technologist, Resource Management Projects - Full-Time Position

Position Overview:

Under the general guidance and direction of the Forester, this position is responsible for providing technical advice, coordination, and implementation of private and public land forest management and stewardship projects. These strategic forest management initiatives support Regional forest health and management goals, focused on addressing climate change, invasive species management and improving forest heath. Additionally, the position promotes the delivery of private land forest stewardship programs and assists with the preparation and implementation of long and short term forest management objectives on TRCA owned lands. Additionally, this position is responsible for the preparation, and consultation of MNR Managed Forest Tax Incentive Plans (MFTIP), Butternut Assessments, individual tree inventories, Tree Protection Plans and, Arborist Reports. This position works in collaboration with other funding agencies to help promote tree planting and forest management initiatives within TRCA watersheds.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Post-secondary Degree or Diploma Forestry/Forestry Science/Aboriculture or a related field.
  • 3 years’ experience related to major tasks, including direct field experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of resource management principles and restoration ecology, and their application in regeneration project design.
  • Possess, or eligibility to obtain, Managed Forest Tax Incentive Plan approver status.
  • Understanding of environmental legislation, including the Conservation Authorities Act, Species at Risk, and other policies as required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of resource management principles and restoration ecology and their application in regeneration project design.
  • Ability to form partnerships and sustain strategic long-term business relationships.
  • Understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Excellent customer/client relationship management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills and modes for landowner education.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Working knowledge of ArcMap, Excel and Word applications.
  • Valid Ontario G driver’s license in good standing.

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct on-site and desktop assessments and inventories to plan, and develop forest management strategies to meet TRCA, and partner goals and objectives.
  2. Develop plans to improve forest heath and address climate change, invasive species management and wildlife habitat improvement.
  3. Prepare accurate budget estimates for individual projects for approval by senior management, or to secure payment by private landowners.
  4. Meet with landowners, partners and TRCA staff to discuss proposals and develop management goals.
  5. Prepare invoices for landowners, partners and funding agencies.
  6. Maintain and update client database and program records to organize program participants and assess program efficiency.
  7. Prepare tenders RFPs and RFQs for selected management operations, and develop and supervise contractors delivering forestry services.
  8. Manage forest inventory and planning for the preparation, approval and submissions to Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry MFTIP program.
  9. Write reports and submit Management Plans and Conservation Plans to landowners and partners for submissions to OMNRF.
  10. Complete tree inventories and assessments in accordance with appropriate tree protection by-laws
  11. Provides general on-site supervision of forest management and implementation staff to ensure plan execution, compliance, and provide mentorship and guidance.

Compensation

Salary range:
$59,731 - $66,782 / year, 35 hours per week
