Starting Rate: Commensurate with experience

Summary

Ecotrust Forest Management (EFM), is seeking a Forestry Technician to perform a range of tasks on its properties and for its clients in the Pacific Northwest. This position will be based out of Portland, Oregon and requires frequent travel and living in remote locations.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Install forest inventory and cruise plots.
  • Conduct GIS analysis and map making.
  • Complete road inventories.
  • Assist with photo points and other ecological monitoring.
  • Perform property inspections.
  • Assist with harvest layout, tree marking and field mapping.
  • Manage harvest and processing of non-timber forest products such as holiday greens and chanterelles
  • Conduct vegetation management activities including pre-commercial thinning, fuels reduction, and invasive species management.
  • Promote and maintain a safe working environment in compliance with all applicable state and federal laws and company policy.
  • Other tasks and duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in forestry or natural resources management.
  • Valid Driver’s License and ability to travel safely between work sites.
  • Experience using a chainsaw and other basic hand tools.
  • Ability to interact professionally with co-workers, contractors, and external stakeholders, such as investors, public agencies, conservation groups, and community members.
  • Interest and commitment to land stewardship.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Training and experience with ArcGIS, MS Office, Windows Mobile and cruising data collection applications.
  • Forest management work experience including cruising, inventory, and harvest layout.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently utilizes power-driven cutting tools such as chainsaws and brush saws, and a variety of hand tools. The employee will be regularly required to navigate and traverse steep, rugged terrain in all weather conditions. Environmental hazards include steep slopes, dense brush, logging slash, down logs and other obstacles, and water.

The employee is consistently exposed to outdoor weather, including, but not limited to extreme heat, extreme cold, rain, snow, wind, and other adverse conditions.
