Forestry Supervisor (JOB # J0817-0854)

Responsible for the maintenance and preservation of trees in the City’s park/open space, facilities, boulevards and woodlands; as well as the preservation/protection of private trees as it relates to the Private Tree Bylaw permit process. Supervises forestry staff involved in park/streetscapes and urban forestry function. Implements and monitors annual works programs and coordinates projects with other departments, municipalities, and government agencies. Directly supervises Forestry Arborists and ensures contractors and tendering process meet necessary time lines. Prepares and recommends policies and procedures, ensures compliance with safety rules and work standards, and responds to enquiries and resolves complaints from the general public. Oversee the subdivision review process including recommendations for guaranteed maintenance and assumption. Participate in summer/winter on-call responsibilities; including winter snow removal operations. Develop business strategy and direction and implements into operational plans at the functional level such as Forestry Operations Business Plan, Annual Tree Replacement Program, monthly report data and tree assessment. Forecasts budgets, analyze and interpret financial and management data and monitor performance and expenditures.

Qualifications and experience:

·    Diploma in Arboriculture or Forestry or suitable equivalent.

·    I.S.A. Certificate (International Society of Arboriculture) or Ontario Certified Arborist.

·    Minimum of five (5) years progressively more responsible Forestry/Arboricultural experience, including three (3) years supervisory experience preferably in a municipal / union environment.

·    “Competent” worker as defined under the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act.

·    Ability to deal effectively and courteously with public and staff.

·    GIS / data management an asset.
