Title: Forestry Research Technician

Type: Temporary/Seasonal (July 2017-August 2017)

Reports To: Technical Applications Supervisor

Location:  Based in Minneapolis, MN, however some travel will be required throughout Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the Dakotas.

As our company continues to grow, new opportunities are becoming available.  CNUC is currently seeking Forestry Research Technicians in the Minneapolis, MN area. This will be a full-time seasonal position with the possibility to exten depending on work load.The primary focus of this position is to aid in field sampling in support of a project to assess risk of EAB caused tree mortality on the electric system. This position will perform fieldwork that consists of variable workdays, potentially including some weekend hours. Work days may include long days in variable weather conditions.

Responsibilities:

  • Collect tree data for field surveys along electric utility lines
  • Identify species, take standard forestry measurements, complete risk assessments, and record information about each site
  • Operate and maintain all field equipment
  • Contct and communicate with private landowners
  • Interact with the public and coworkers in a professional manner
  • Extensive drive time through the state inspecting vegetation management work
  • Detailed data collection
  • Daily utilization of GIS maps, rangefinders, tremble units, planning software on tablets and much more
  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned

Requirements: 

  • Ability to identify eastern U.S. tree species as well as invasive plant species common to the upper Midwest
  • Bachelor of Science in forestry or related field preferred, however students working towards a degree in forestry or related program will also be considered
  • ISA Arborist Certification preferred
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
  • Ability to work independently with good time management
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to travel and work in rugged terrain and inclement weather
  • Positive attitude and commitment to quality are essential
  • Proficient in map navigation skills
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and data collection software a plus
