Overview

One position is located in Tumwater, Washington and one in Molalla, Oregon.  Travel to each location should be expected.

A successful applicant should be proficient in basic forestry navigation (compass, pacing), use of basic forestry tools (Relaskop, prism, clinometer, Spencer tape, range-finder), reading and navigating with a map, photo interpretation and able to work alone on specific assignments. Experience with hand-held GPS devices is a plus.

  • Harvest Unit Layout – Assist in flagging harvest boundaries and riparian or leave areas. Locate property corners and/or boundaries.  May assist in some road layout and/or culvert location. May work alone on assigned projects. 
  • Road Inventory – Travel forest roads to inventory road conditions and features.
  • Farm Management Programs – Perform general labor projects that may include carpentry, painting, and fire equipment maintenance.
  • Tree Marking/Thinning –Assist District Forester or Area Forester by selecting trees to be removed and monitoring the progress of a commercial thinning operation to ensure limited damage to soil and/or residual trees.
  • Other –Maintain company vehicles, equipment and other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Education/Experience –Two years or more related industry experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. . 
  • Language Ability –Ability to read, analyze, and interpret governmental regulations.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public.
  • Math Ability – Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, trigonometry and quadratic equations.    
  • Reasoning Ability – Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Computer/Technical Skills – Ability to use the MS Office Suite, word-processing, spreadsheets, and e-mail.
  • Other Competencies/Characteristics – Proven ability to work with all types of individuals both internal and external to the organization. Ability to manage multiple projects often in a fast paced environment.  Must use good judgment in decision-making and performance of duties; strong orientation to quality work is required.  Ability to assimilate new information quickly.

Compensation

Compensation: Freshman $15/hour; Sophomore $16/hour; Junior $17/ hour, Senior $18/ hour, Bachelor’s degree $19/hour; $1,000 stipend for relocation, if necessary.
