Working on Fire Australia is currently seeking firefighters of varying backgrounds and skill levels for the upcoming fire season. If successful, you will be working in small teams on a variety of forest management activities, including wildfire suppression, weed control, fire trail maintenance and potentially hazard reduction burning. You may be required to work extended hours over prolonged periods including weekends under physically demanding conditions. 

It is important for all applicants to consider that your primary reason for employment is Forest Fire Suppression and you will be required to form part of a fire readiness structure, including being on a Fire Roster. It is possible that you will be required to be on-call at home dependant on fire danger conditions.  

When we are not performing our Fire Suppression duties, Staff may undertake a variety of field based and manual works including:

  • Fire readiness including on-call, standby and patrol
  • Weed Management using Chemical Spraying Equipment
  • Cleaning out blocked road culverts
  • Roadside clearing using brush-hooks, pole saws and chainsaws
  • Cutting out pine regeneration using pruning shears or brush cutters
  • Clearing fire trails of fallen trees using chainsaws
  • Fencing maintenance and construction
  • Sign construction and maintenance
  • Hazard reduction burning and establishment burning in autumn/winter
  • General field work in pine plantations and native forests 

Successful candidates must possess:

  • Current drivers licence – minimum Class C.
  • Physical fitness (must be able to pass medical examination and various functional/fitness tests) 
  • Ability to work in a small team environment
  • A high regard for safety

Currently the Employment period will be from October 2017 through to March 2018, but this could be extended, dependant on the Fire Season and other work available on conclusion of the Fire Season.

Desirable skills / job qualifications include:

  • National bush-firefighting competencies and experience
  • Truck licence (HR or MR)
  • Fire Tanker competencies and experience
  • Chemcert Qualification
  • Chainsaw Operators Qualification 

Location:  Orange and Sunny Corner, NSW.

Compensation

$20 - $29.99 per hour
