Manage public and private forested lands for economic, recreational, and conservation purposes. May inventory the type, amount, and location of standing timber, appraise the timber's worth, negotiate the purchase, and draw up contracts for procurement. May determine how to conserve wildlife habitats, creek beds, water quality, and soil stability, and how best to comply with environmental regulations. May devise plans for planting and growing new trees, monitor trees for healthy growth, and determine optimal harvesting schedules.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Plan and supervise forestry projects, such as determining the type, number and placement of trees to be planted, thinning forest and monitoring growth of new seedlings.
  • Establish short- and long-term plans for management of forest lands and forest resources.
  • Determine methods of cutting and removing timber with minimum waste and environmental damage.
  • Monitor contract compliance and results of forestry activities to assurance compliance to tribal standards

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervise activities of other forestry workers.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Minimum, Baccalaureate degree in forestry or meet OPM X-118 Standard for Forester Services and have a minimum of 3-years recent professional experience in silviculture, forest management, or closely related fields.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Strong oral and written communication skills required. Must have excellent computer skills including word, excel, and experience with varying databases. Geographic Information System (GIS) training is an asset but not required.

  • Analytical or scientific software — Forest vegetation simulators; Forest yield software
  • Database software – Data entry software, MS Access
  • Electronic mail software – Microsoft Outlook
  • Map creation software – ArcMap/Arc Catalog geographic information system and related Global Positioning System mobile units.
  • Oral comprehension - The ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
  • Oral expression - The ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand.
  • Written Comprehension - The ability to read and understand information and ideas presented in writing.
  • Deductive reasoning - The ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.
  • Written Expression - The ability to communicate information and ideas in writing so others will understand.

Must be at least 18 years of age, have and maintain a valid driver’s license with a clean drivers abstract in accordance with the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Fleet Policy.

A list of qualified candidates is created from interviews that may be used to appoint individuals to similar positions within the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe for a period of six months.
