We have an immediate opening for a Forester in our Nanaimo Office, reporting to the Operations Planner. This position is responsible for the planning and delivery of silvicultural programs carried out within TimberWest’s private forestlands and it includes a combination of field and office duties. Regular duties will include a combination of hands on delivery and management of contractors.

Responsibilities

  • Support safety process management within forestry programs
  • Participate in the maintenance of TimberWest’s environmental certification programs
  • Deploy TimberWest’s Contract Management System in the recruitment of contractors and the execution of silviculture contract requirements
  • Carry out the completion of operational site plans (both field and office components)
  • Complete forest health assessments and treatments
  • Submit sowing requests, plan and manage spring and summer planting programs
  • Schedule and complete silvicultural surveys
  • Plan and manage manual and chemical brushing programs
  • Assist in the coordination and implementation of fire protection plans
  • Manage post harvest prescribed burning and other hazard abatement treatments
  • Track and report silvicultural obligations and compliance
  • Liaise with TimberWest seed orchard personnel and external forest nurseries
  • Liaise with government agencies, First Nations and local stakeholders
  • Participate in the preparation of budgets, accruals and forecasts
  • Participate in the planning and delivery of fertilization programs

Qualifications

  • At least 3-5 years’ operational experience
  • Registered Professional Forester or RPF eligible
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and familiarity with ‘The Forest Manager (TFM)’, ‘Plant Wizard’, ‘Survey Wizard’ and basic GIS functions
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Valid BC Class 5 driver’s license
  • Ability to work well within a team environment
  • Although it is not a requirement to have experience in all of the listed responsibilities, candidates must be capable of developing the requisite knowledge and skills.
