The Kemmerer Field Office is responsible for the management of 1.4 million acres of public land and approximately 1.6 million acres of Federal mineral estate in the southwest corner of Wyoming. The area managed by the Kemmerer Field Office extends from Star Valley south to Evanston, and from the Green River near Fontenelle Reservoir west to the Utah border.
Physical Demands: Work is divided between activity in an office environment and moderate to heavy physical activity in the field. The ability to safely operate four-wheel drive vehicles and ATVs is necessary. During winter conditions, operation of over-snow vehicles such as snow machines and the Thiokol are necessary. The ability to walk over steep, rough, uneven or rocky terrain at extreme elevations is required. Also hiking through extremely dense brush, logging slash and tree covered terrain, often wet or occasionally snow covered is required.
Work Environment: Some work is performed in an adequately lighted, heated, and air conditioned office. However, considerable outdoor activity is required to complete project work. The outdoor activity involves working in isolated or back country areas, working at high altitudes, working alone, working in extreme weather conditions, and travel in hazardous terrain. Safety precautions are required, and the employee must wear protective equipment in the forest area.
Responsibilities
This position serves as forester for a Bureau of Land Management field office. The incumbent may be required to perform as crew chief or project manager for teams of other foresters involved in forest and woodland management. The incumbent plans and implements technical projects and performs leadership duties in support of forestry-oriented, multiple-use land management programs, including coordination of appropriate staff to accomplish the work. Performance of these duties are critical to accomplishment of the long-range forest management programs, to meeting the objectives of the district/field/zone resource management plan, and to providing solutions for technical, budgetary, staffing, and customer service needs related to forest management.
At the GS-09 level, work will be of less complexity and with more supervision.
Qualifications In addition to meeting the basic entry requirement, applicants must have specialized experience and/or directly related education of the position to be found qualified. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade.
To qualify for the GS-09 you must have: Specialized experience for the GS-09 Forester: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in forestry related work. At this level, Foresters independently perform recurring assignments that are more difficult & complex than those performed by a recent graduate. Examples: experience which provided knowledge of forest management principles and practices as well as related laws, regulations and policies sufficient to support forestry-oriented, multiple-use land management programs such as trespass, public coordination, contracting, survey and records, silviculture, cruising/appraising and forest products sales; OR 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master`s degree or master`s or equivalent graduate degree in the field of forestry or directly related fields of study; OR have an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above. Only graduate level education in excess of the first year may be combined with experience.
To qualify for the GS-11, you must have the following: Specialized experience for the GS-11 Forester: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in forestry related work. Examples include experience which provided knowledge and skill in applying forest management principles and practices as well as related laws, regulation and policies sufficient to support forestry-oriented, multiple-use land management programs such as land use planning, litigation, protests and appeals, trespass, public review and coordination, contracting survey and records, prescription/planning, silviculture projects, cruising/appraising and forest and woodland products sales; OR 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in the field of forestry or directly related fields of study; OR have an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above. Only graduate level education in excess of the first two years may be combined with experience.

Compensation
Salary: $50,598 to $79,586 per year
