Job Summary

This vacancy is part-time (13.5 hours/week).

Perform assigned tasks to assist with the coordination and management of Duluth's urban forest resources.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Coordinate the inspection, replacement, planting, fertilization, pruning and pest control for boulevard and park trees and trees within City forests.
2. Develop tree inventory and hazard tree assessment for boulevard and park trees and trees within City forests.
3. Assist with maintenance of the tree nursery, including researching tree species and purchasing stock.
4. Conduct soil testing.
5. Assist with the Dutch Elm disease and Emerald Ash Borer control programs, which includes detection, public notification, removal, injection, and conducting research to monitor changing conditions.
6. Assist with public education and coordinate responses to stakeholder inquiries.
7. Coordinate removal of waste wood and production of woodchips for landscaping use.
8. Coordinate urban forestry activities with Parks Maintenance crews, the Urban Forest Commission, stakeholders, and regulatory agencies.
9. Develop and administer urban forestry plans and initiatives to maintain the City's Tree City USA status.
10. Work across the City organization on forestry issues with other departments, administration and the City Council.
11. Facilitate forestry planning efforts as requested.
12. Maintain required records, complete reports and analysis for forestry related activities and issues.
13. Evaluate programs and recommend improvements.
14. Develop work plans for City forestry crews to implement.
15. Monitor accomplishments and provide periodic progress reports.
16. Act as a liaison to other departments, divisions, outside agencies, and the general public in order to coordinate departmental operations, interpret departmental objectives, solicit input, respond to inquiries, requests, and complaints.
17. Represent the department at public meetings, community boards, and government commissions.
18. Provide expertise and technical assistance to other divisions, department, and agencies.

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience Requirements
A. Possession of a degree in forest management or a related field plus two years of verifiable experience in urban forestry or in a position with duties similar to those described above; or
B. A combination of education and experience equivalent to four years in forest management or a related field.

License Requirements
A. Possession of a valid Minnesota Class "D" driver's license.
B. Possession of a Tree Inspector's License.
C. Certification as an Arborist.

Age Requirement
A. Must be age 18 or older.
