Job Description:

Become familiar with the technical material in the Field Office Technical Guide (FOTG) relating to the forestry discipline. This will include development and maintenance of conservation practice standards, and statewide cost list information and determining the use and distribution of forestry related technical information.

The perspective candidate will provide Forestry Conservation Planning to local field offices and obtain Tool kit knowledge and NRCS conservation planning information from local Natural Resources Conservation Service offices.

Perspective candidate will make field visits with local NRCS staff to obtain conservation planning awareness on traditional agricultural and forestry landscapes and determine recommendations as required. Training with the NRCS State Forester will be required as well as attendance to Conservation Workshops which will include: Prescribed Burning, Native Grass Identification and others as recommended by the State Forester.

Responsible for preparing Forestry Brief Management Plans for customers who participate in the Farm Bill Programs, provide landowners with information on local forestry markets, and provide landowners with Forestry/Wildlife job sheets for Forestry/Wildlife conservation planning practices.

Partner with local Georgia Forestry Commission Foresters to obtain local forestry knowledge of the project area and partner with local Georgia Department of Natural Resources biologists and assist with forestry and wildlife conservation planning projects.

The candidate will primarily serve in Area 3 of the state, but may be required to assist in other areas.

Candidate should be a Professional Registered Forester or SAF Certified Forester or be working towards these credentials

Other duties assigned by Golden Triangle and NRCS Area Offices.

Qualifications:

Degree: forestry; or a related subject-matter field that included a total of at least 30 semester hours in any combination of biological, physical, or mathematical sciences or engineering, of which at least 24 semester hours of course work were in forestry. The curriculum must have been sufficiently diversified to include courses in each of the following areas:

  • Management of Renewable Resources -- study of the science and art of managing renewable resources to attain desired results. Examples of creditable courses in this area include silviculture, forest management operations, timber management, wildland fire science or fire management, utilization of forest resources, forest regulation, recreational land management, watershed management, and wildlife or range habitat management.

  • Forest Biology -- study of the classification, distribution, characteristics, and identification of forest vegetation, and the interrelationships of living organisms to the forest environment. Examples of creditable courses in this area include dendrology, forest ecology, silvics, forest genetics, wood structure and properties, forest soils, forest entomology, and forest pathology.

  • Forest Resource Measurements and Inventory -- sampling, inventory, measurement, and analysis techniques as applied to a variety of forest resources. Examples of creditable courses include forest biometrics, forest mensuration, forest valuation, statistical analysis of forest resource data, renewable natural resources inventories and analysis, and photogrammetry or remote sensing.
