FORESTER POSITION OPEN:

Green Timber Consulting Foresters, Inc., located in Arnheim, Michigan (16 miles south of Houghton) is seeking candidates to fill a vacancy on our forestry staff. The successful applicant will be involved in a wide variety of field forestry tasks with emphasis on forest inventory, development of management plans, and timber sale preparation and administration. This is a full-time position that will involve occasional work for extended periods of time working outside of the Western Upper Peninsula. However, working hours/months could be flexible to accommodate the successful applicant.

EMPLOYMENT DUTIES INCLUDE:

- Variable radius and fixed radius inventory sampling to meet a diverse range of specifications on a variety of projects.

- Accurately measuring and recording tree data into a handheld device.

- Timber marking in a variety of forest types, following appropriate silvicultural prescriptions.

- Collecting detailed information at the property and stand level to be used for the production of high quality management plans.

- Establishing timber harvest and riparian management zone boundaries.

- Timber sale and road layout.

- Timber sale marketing, contracting, and administration.

- Using maps and GPS for field navigation and a variety of forestry applications.

- Minor maintenance of field gear.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

- Minimum of two years of forestry-related education. Bachelors of Science in Forestry is preferred however an Associates of Science in Forestry would be considered.

- Minimum of two summers or six months of practical field experience directly involved in the duties stated for this position. More experience is a plus and would be compensated accordingly.

Candidates with forest inventory and timber marking experience are preferred.

- Knowledge and experience of forest inventory measurements and techniques.

- Experience using GPS receivers and handheld electronic data collection devices.

- Experience and ability to navigate rugged, swampy, and brushy forest conditions during all seasons and with the use of snowshoes when necessary.

- Experience and ability to work in variable and at times harsh weather and environmental conditions including extreme cold, heat, and insects.

- Familiarity with Microsoft Office software and displayed written and communication skills.

- Experience and ability to safely operate a pick-up truck, ATV, and snowmobile in remote areas and on minimally maintained road systems.

- General understanding and ability to maintain an ATV and snowmobile and troubleshoot minor mechanical problems.

- Self-motivation, organization, and honesty.

- Ability to work independently for extended periods of time.

- Ability and willingness to live and work in various States for extended periods of time.

- Daily logistics planning, correspondence, and safety check-ins with supervisor.

- Practicing personal safety on a daily basis.

- Obtain and maintain a valid Michigan driver’s license within eight weeks of hire.
