Forest Technician (Forester)

Summary: Responsible for providing assistance to Foresters, Area Managers and the District Manager in the total operational area of the Walterboro District, but may also have a geographic area of responsibility assigned by the District Manager. This person will be assigned to work in other Districts and designated to work on special projects, both in and out of state and in and out of this AFM Region. The successful applicant will be in the field the majority of the time.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Gather field data, process cruise data, update stand records and forest type maps.

  • Cruise, evaluate, and assist in the negotiation of timber on tracts to be harvested.

In Addition:

  • Inspect timber-harvesting operations for contract compliance and file reports according to AFM policy.

  • Assist in negotiations, administration, and inspection of all forestry related activities, such as road and drainage construction and maintenance, and other land management projects as assigned.

  • Maintain contractor contacts, including rates and equipment available in the geographic area.

  • Develop and maintain a close working relationship with local state forestry organization personnel and other local forest products companies.

  • Assist with the development and administration of alternate revenues from client property and income from the hunting lease program.

  • Supervise site preparation and tree planting operations.

  • Assist Area Managers and District Manager in the development of the annual operating budgets, for AFM and Clients.

  • Provide data and assistance in land sales programs.

  • Perform other related duties and tasks as necessary or as assigned.

 

Computer Skills:

Competent using Outlook, Word and Excel, experience using Data Recorders, GIS & GPS capabilities.

 

Certificates and Licenses:

Diploma and a Valid Driver’s License with clean driving record.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Knowledge and experience supervising logging contractors and silvicultural treatment, inventory, road and drainage improvement crews.

 

Work Environment:

Primarily remote and sometimes hostile field environment with occasional office time. Subject to various means of transportation, including off-road and all-terrain vehicles. Required to walk, drive or ride through rough terrain and weather conditions. This position involves working long periods of time outdoors, sometimes in adverse weather conditions, with limited ability to communicate, alone or with other crew members.

 

Required Experience:


Formal training and experience in timber cruising, image interpretation, property surveying, timber harvesting, road construction, site preparation, planting, and other duties that pertain to forest management.

•Familiarity with Microsoft spreadsheet and word processing software. GIS & GPS training and experience a plus.

•Working knowledge of wildlife habitat management practices.
