Forest Technician / Crew Leader (Technologists & Technicians)

Position: Forest technician / crew leader

Hours per week: 30-50 (weather dependent, typically 40 hour weeks, 4 – 10 hour days/week possible)

Starting Date: Approximately June 1st, 2017

Position Description:

This is a full time position conducting forest inventory field work in northern Minnesota. Applicant will work alone and/or lead a 2 to 4 person crew. Organize and schedule work responsibilities for crew, track production, and provide periodic reports to office staff. Position may also include private woodland management planning and timber sale setup.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience

AAS or higher degree in forestry from a Society of American Foresters accredited college. Documented minimum three months experience doing forest inventory or related work preferred.

Technical

Field work will require a proficiency in one or more timber appraisal methods (training provided). Strong mapping, orienteering, and aerial photography interpretation skills are required. Proficiency in MN tree species identification at all growth stages is required. Strong GIS and Excel skills preferred.

Personal

Preferred candidates will demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills, friendliness, flexibility and an ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and forest management philosophies.

Other

Applicant must be self-starting and comfortable working alone and with others in remote locations, in difficult terrain and extreme weather conditions. Applicant must give proper attention to detail, produce quality work subject to peer review, and implement diligent and organized record keeping on a regular basis. Familiarity with small engine maintenance and repair preferred. Significant travel within northern Minnesota required (est. 50 to 75%). Valid driver’s license and clean driving record required. Must be able to operate an ATV and snowmobile safely and responsibly.
