Forest Planning Analyst (Forester)

AFM’s team of professionals is focused on meeting client needs by providing a complete range of forestry services including land and wildlife management, land sale and acquisition services, forest inventory and design, growth and yield modeling, cash flow projections, environmental services, appraisal, forest resource data management and harvest scheduling.

The Forest Planning and Analysis group is responsible for harvest scheduling services for land management and forest investment decision support, as well as providing the biometric services necessary for planning and analysis. The successful Forest Planning Analyst candidate will work in a team environment with planning analysts, biometricians, and other operating groups to provide forest planning services to AFM and its customers. 

Job Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Develop harvest schedule models for a variety of customers throughout AFM’s operating regions
  • Utilize models to generate discounted cash flow analysis for timberland investment and asset valuation purposes
  • Work closely with customers throughout the strategic and tactical planning process
  • Manage planning model data including compiling and normalizing input from multiple data sources, analyzing inventory and attribute information, validating yield projections
  • Research financial inputs including but not limited to forest product pricing and forecasts
  • Interpret and communicate model results clearly to a variety of customers, through phone calls, emails and in-person meetings
  • Market AFM’s Planning and Analysis services and provide general business development at professional conferences and trade shows

Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Forestry or Natural Resource Management, preferred
  • Strong analytical skills for evaluating planning model behavior
  • An aptitude for problem-solving
  • Exposure to Remsoft’s Spatial Planning System
  • Understanding of linear programming optimization, geographic information system concepts, relational databases, forest information systems
  • Familiarity with R for data analytics and statistical analysis
  • Ability to interpret and effectively communicate model results with field managers and clients
  • Preferred minimum two years of work experience in forest management
  • Willingness to travel throughout the AFM operating area
