Northern Pulp Nova Scotia Corporation is a northern bleached softwood kraft (NBSK) pulpmill located at Abercrombie Point in Pictou county Nova Scotia. The Woodlands team conducts forest management activities on over 250,000 hectares of timberland in Nova Scotia and is currently seeking qualified applicants for the following position:

Forest Operations Planner

The successful candidate would report to the Woodlands Operations Planning Leader and work from the woodlands office in Abercrombie with daily work location varying throughout central and eastern Nova Scotia. The incumbent will be a part of the forest planning team and will develop road and harvest plans to support the development and implementation of annual operating plans on company managed lands. This position requires extensive on-the-ground reconnaissance and collection of forest data specifically harvestable area, harvest product volumes, harvest prescription, harvest season and road construction/ maintenance requirements along with associated costs. The harvest block design process requires integration of ecological and social values.

Position requirements

  • A degree or diploma from a recognized forestry program with at least three to five years of experience in the forest products industry, the majority of this being in forest operations or forest operations planning.
  • The incumbent must have strong planning and organizational skills
  • Work independently with strong initiative and be a results oriented individual
  • Good communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Have a technical background that includes skills in Arc pad, geographic information systems (GIS), data management, and photo interpretation.
  • Knowledge of Nova Scotia’s provincial forestry and environmental regulations would be an asset
  • Knowledge of provincial Forest Ecosystem Classification would be considered an asset.
