Summary

Apply statistical techniques to knowledge of biological entities or populations of Forest Growth. Create reports and maps to be distributed to Area Foresters, Biologists, and management for evaluation of sustainability and long term planning. Responsible for development of Forest Growth and Yield Models

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop, organize, implement, and manage timber inventory
  • Interpret aerial photographs to determine timber types and other forest attributes
  • Develop and maintain timber stand shape files using Geographic Information Systems
  • Design specific maps to display various forest values
  • Work with forest managers to develop growth and yield models and outputs
  • Project inventories and timber investment modeling
  • Support Forest Managers with land management planning
  • Develop methodology for the integration of simulation outputs from model
  • Focus to include the need to improve representation of forest ecosystem (relationship between relevant plant and soil processes and atmosphere) that underpin the improved prediction of stand growth and forest development under changing environmental and management conditions
  • Forestry practice, include high-resolution information for stand structure, to assess wood quality, quantity, harvesting procedures and costs
  • Risk assessment – ie; storm damage, fire, pests, disease, human impact (recreation, landownership) to growth performance; effects to consider
  • Silvicultural impacts

 

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (B. S.) from four-year college or university in Forestry, Natural Resources or closely related field; minimum five years experience in forest inventory analysis, timber cruising, other closely related biological sampling; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Must carry a valid California Driver’s License and be eligible to operate a company vehicle under company policy guidelines
  • Must be proficient with CACTOS, CRYPTOS, FORESEE, or other similar forest growth models. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office suite including Access
  • To perform this position successfully, an individual should have knowledge of ESRI software, relational databases, statistical programs, computer programming, word processing and Internet software
  • Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations
  • Apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
