What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role, you will:
  • provide expert advice and analysis on issues and decisions related to the ministry's business arrangements and relationship with the Ontario forest industry
  • act as the region's primary liaison with the forest industry on matters related to potential new investments in the forest industry, mill closures or mill reconfiguration
  • lead the review of forest company business plans and proposals respecting new investments, facility and/or operations changes from the perspective of the Industry Development Section programs and collaborate with Forestry Industry Division staff, other regional offices and ministries
  • support the review of forest company business plans for other parts of the ministry and for other ministries by providing expert advice and analysis on forestry related projects and proposals
  • provide regional economic impact analysis relating to existing and proposed forest resource legislation and regulations relating to the forest industry and communities
  • collaborate with experts in other regions, ministries and levels of government to leverage economic development activity in the forest industry and to support a globally-competitive environment for the industry
  • prepare minister's and house briefing notes, special project reports and correspondence
  • participate on special task teams established to address cross region or province wide issues, project or policy development related to the forest industry
Please note that this position will require some occasional travel.

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

  • candidate must have a valid class 'G' driver's licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario, in order to travel for site visits

Specialized knowledge:

  • thorough knowledge of the forest industry, including its economic significance regionally and globally, emerging trends and competitiveness of Ontario's forest industry globally
  • ability to interpret and apply related legislation, regulation, policies, procedures and programs applicable to the forest industry
  • experience working with business, finance and economic theory and tools, including evaluating business plans and financial statements, economic modeling and wood supply and demand modeling

People skills:

  • well developed interpersonal, facilitation and communication skills to prepare informative notes, and present ideas and issues to senior management
  • demonstrated ability to influence and achieve results through others

General skills:

  • analytical, strategic thinking, innovation, project management and negotiation skills
  • demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to take initiative and work under pressure
  • proficient computer skills using a variety of software such as word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software
