JOB DESCRIPTION 

Reporting to the Vice President Human Resources, and with the overarching objective of Defining a Higher Standard in safety, the Director, Health and Safety is accountable and responsible for providing overall leadership and direction for Western’s Health and Safety system as well as ensuring the appropriate structure and framework exists to provide a safe and healthful workplace for all Western’s employees and contractors.

This role provides oversight to the design and delivery of sound business and safety practices to achieve a zero-incident workplace, intentionally fosters a company-wide safety culture of commitment to safety, and ensures compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.

This role is located on Vancouver Island, based out of Campbell River or Nanaimo, BC, with travel required.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate is a Health and Safety leader from a multi-site, unionized production, manufacturing, or industrial environment such as mining, construction, oil and gas, or forestry. A demonstrated track record of successfully developing health and safety strategies, implementing programs and positively transforming the safety culture of an organization is required. You are a clear communicator, with a structured and professional approach, resolute and unwavering in the commitment to a safety culture. In addition, you are capable of consulting and building the internal and external relationships to ensure success. You are as comfortable in the boardroom as you are in the field.
