Collaborative Forestry Manager (Silviculture & Reforestation)

Hampton Lumber is seeking qualified candidates for a Manager of Collaborative Forestry position to support public timber harvest projects that contribute to meeting the annual log volume requirements of the Darrington, Morton, and Randle sawmills.  The person in this position will work in close coordination with Hampton’s resource and manufacturing staff to develop stakeholder partnerships supportive of our rural communities that promote active management and sustained yield timber harvests on public lands. He/she will engage in public collaborative processes and will advocate for forestland treatments that support economic needs as well as forest health and environmental values.  

Hampton is a third-generation family-owned wood products company headquartered in Portland, Oregon. Hampton operates nine sawmills on the West Coast including three in Washington in the communities of Darrington, Morton, and Randle, and manages 120,000 acres of forestland in Oregon and Washington.  

Detailed responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Participate in community efforts to ensure local rural communities have adequate and sustained access to the economic benefits provided by public forests.

  • Advocate for effective forest management projects on the Mt. Baker/Snoqualmie, Gifford Pinchot, and Okanogan/Wenatchee National Forests, as well as local state-owned lands to sustain and enhance local wood manufacturing operations.

  • Regular attendance and participation in federal, state, and local agency meetings relating to resource management planning on public lands.

  • Support forest industry association efforts to ensure federal and state laws, regulations, policies, and decisions regarding access to and management of public lands reflect the needs of rural communities and the local wood manufacturing sector.

  • Engage with local and regional stakeholders to identify communities’ needs and interests.

  • Develop and implement activities to identify and engage community partners, build partnerships, and raise awareness of Hampton’s needs, goals, and priorities.

  • Assist Hampton’s forestry staff in evaluating and responding to public agency project solicitations. 

  • Frequent (75%) independent travel by vehicle throughout west central and eastern Washington, (including overnight stay, and occasional evenings and weekends).

Skills & Qualifications:

  • A self-motivated communicator with a sincere commitment to Hampton core values and business activity.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and openness to listening, learning, and interacting with people with different interests and attitudes in a positive and constructive manner.

  • Familiarity with the political, social, and economic landscape of Washington and rural communities.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Outlook with excellent written skills and familiarity with social media platforms.

  • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and time management skills.

  • Assertive and responsible while exemplifying the highest level of ethics, honesty, and integrity.

  • Field and administrative experience in federal and state land timber harvest project work.    

Education & Training Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in forestry, natural resource management, or related field.

  • Experience with communications/public speaking desirable but not required.
