Job Summary:
Under the supervision of the Plant Manager, the Chief Operating Engineer is responsible for managing, supervising, training, operating and maintaining the plant in a safe condition in accordance with the Technical Standards and Safety Act (TSSA).    The successful candidate will also be accountable for safe and consistent production by maintaining adequate steam production, thermal oil and water supplies and maintenance of heaters and makeup air units in order to supply the plant's energy requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensures total care and control of the plant's heat plant, ventilation equipment and plant water systems
  • Participates in the development of a preventative maintenance program under their responsibility and identifies maintenance activities and priorities in conjunction with the Maintenance and Manufacturing Departments
  • Controls expenditures within budget, ensuring high standards of work in a cost effective manner
  • Provides prompt and efficient response to any process or facility requirement
  • Oversees daily plant inspections to ensure all systems are operating in a safe and expected manner
  • Ensures the recording of data and all relevant information to the operation of the plant under their jurisdiction and records all information on the Company's computer system.  Any information captured outside the Company's computer system by any means becomes the property of the Company.
  • Maximizes uptime through efficient operation of Energy Plant systems and operations
  • Provides leadership and direction to all operating engineers with a focus on continuous improvement; instills safety, objectives, and measurements; fosters good staff relationships in order to gain commitment from all employees
  • Trains operating engineers regarding heat operations, safety and technical functionalities of their work
  • Conducts annual performance reviews, provides continual feedback and motivates employees to meet or exceed organizational expectations
  • Has a bias for action to reduce energy consumption
  • Undertakes capital projects to improve operating performance of the plant in consultation with the their manager
  • Conducts detailed diagnostic audits using Six Sigma processes and techniques and provides coaching and direction to the plant's management team
  • Proven team leader, team player, committed to excellence, positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills
  • Recognize, support and commit to the plant's safety and quality assurance
  • Complies with all applicable laws, regulations and codes, as well as Company policies and procedures which includes but not limited to TSSA regulations, Operating Engineer and Boiler and Pressure Vessel Act regulations and environmental compliance and reporting requirements
  • Maintain a current and working knowledge of new technologies affecting our industry
  • Maintains a safe work environment

Required Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of secondary school education
  • Must possess a valid second (2nd) class operating engineer certificate of qualification
  • Minimum of 8 to 10 years of work-related experience in the industry as a 2nd class operating engineer
  • Minimum of five (5) years supervisory experience


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of PLC systems with ability to troubleshoot problems preferred
  • Proven experience in the management of capital projects
  • Strong leadership abilities, communication and organization skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to present ideas in business-friendly and user-friendly language
  • Exceptionally self-motivated and directed. 
  • Strong leader with superior organization and execution experience
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word) and CMMS (computerized maintenance management system)
