Request for Chief Executive Officer 

Starker Forests, Inc. (SFI), a family owned forest management business, is seeking applications for a Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The CEO, in partnership with the board of directors, is responsible for the success of Starker Forests, Inc., the stewardship of the Starker Family culture and the implementation of the SFI strategic plan.

Qualifications

  • Minimum requirement of bachelor’s degree
  • Master’s degree in a relevant field is preferred but not required
  • At least 10 years of leadership experience in a forestry or business organization
  • Understanding of forestry finance and financial statements
  • Sensitivity to the dynamics of a multi-generational family owned company
  • Understanding of the competitive environment of the timber industry
  • Demonstrated involvement in community and industry organizations

Job Summary
The CEO, in partnership with the board of directors, is responsible for the success of Starker Forests, Inc. (“SFI”), the stewardship of the Starker Family culture, mission and vision, and the implementation of the SFI strategic plan.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

Legal and Compliance
• Assure that SFI operates in compliance with all relevant laws and regulations
• Communicate and uphold the bylaws and policies of the company
• Intervene and take corrective action if company policies are violated

Mission, policy and planning
• Assist the Board and Family Council to determine SFI’s culture, mission, vision
and both short-term and long-term goals
• Implement and monitor the SFI strategic plan
• Pursue triple bottom line (economic, social, and environmental) objectives
• Keep informed of developments in the forest industry at a local, state and national level Board
• Follow directions from the Board
• Attend all Board meetings
• Develop the Board agenda in conjunction with the Board Chair, run the meeting if
chair or vice-chair is not present
• Keep the Board fully informed on the condition of SFI and all the important factors influencing the business by identifying problems and opportunities, and
then facilitating discussion and deliberation
• Recommend major policy decisions to the Board
• Manage budget preparation and it’s presentation to the board
• Work with board chair to appoint board members to committees

Management and Administration
• Provide general oversight of all SFI activities.
• Have familiarity with all staff and their duties.
• Work closely with the executive team through positive communication and
feedback. Promote open and honest communication.
• Perform an annual evaluation of the executive officers
• Assure the organizational stability through the continuation of the SFI culture, the
development of staff and an overall commitment to excellence in its operations
• Assure a work environment that recruits, retains and supports quality staff.
Assure a process of development, motivation and evaluation of employees
• Approve the hiring and firing of employees
• Monitor employee benefits
• Evaluate the overall performance of the company and its employees, if change is
needed recommend action steps, implement those actions and monitor progress
• In conjunction with management, oversee decisions on land purchases within the
approved budget
• Co-sign checks and legal documents
• Monitor corporate insurance and risk including fire, new regulations, and the
public acceptance of forest management
• Monitor marketing and price trends of logs and finished products
• Analyze other business opportunities

Financial Management
• Oversee all fiscal activities of the organization including budgeting, reporting, reviewing financial statements and tax planning.
• Work with the executive team to develop the budget guidelines and communicate the budget to the Board for approval
• Monitor and approve changes in SFI cash management plan
• Monitor and direct profit sharing plan: serve as one of the trustees of the plan
• Provide oversight of investment management
• Review and approve/deny business philanthropy requests that do not fall under the responsibility of the family philanthropy committee. Work with the Board
Chair and Shareholder Relations representative to understand family philosophy and history of giving
• Attend family philanthropy committee meetings

Community Relations
• Serve as chief spokesperson for SFI, assuring proper representation of SFI to the community
• Continue the long term Starker family relationship with OSU Colleges of Forestry and Business through strong partnerships
• Maintain relationships with elected local, state and federal officials
• Serve on industry association boards
• Be active in the local community
• Support employee’s involvement with industry association boards and committees
as well as local community organizations
• Initiate, develop, and maintain cooperative relationships with key constituencies

Family Relationships
• Work closely with the Shareholder Relations representative to ensure the family is informed and involved with decisions where appropriate
• Maintain open and honest communication and transparent relationships with family members to ensure mutual trust, support and respect
• Be responsive to the Family Council and attend meetings as invited
• Understand, appreciate and continue the legacy of the Starker Family history and culture
• Support family involvement with the business
• Consult with the family regarding current and potential board members
