Assistant Woodlands Manager
Porcupine Wood Products (PWP) is a medium size mill approximately 20-minutes south of Nelson, BC. PWP, mainly a cedar manufacturing facility, is the holder of two Forest Licences with a 70,000-m3 AAC. PWP’s tenure is north of Nelson in the Kaslo/Duncan Lake area.
Description:
PWP is looking for an Assistant Woodlands Manager as part of a succession strategy to replace the current Woodlands Manager in the next five years. The successful individual will be expected to manage PWP’s woodlands department and deliver approximately 150,000-m3 annually to the mill in a cost effective program while managing environmental issues, First Nations’ interest and maintaining a positive relationship with the concerned public and Government Agencies.
The Woodlands Manager is responsible for overseeing all phases of cutting permit development, road construction, logging & hauling, road maintenance & deactivation and Silviculture, and managing the contractors &/or PWP personnel performing the above mentioned projects.
The individual must be self-motivated and organized to perform his/her duties without supervision.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
· Assist in managing, maintaining and negotiating all relationships & aspects of managing a 70,000-m3 Forest License;
· Assist in managing all woodland activities related to timber acquisition and harvesting;
· Develop, maintain and expand our customer/supplier relationships;
· Provide forest policy expertise and operational experience to support government and business relationships and activities;
· Assist in ensuring PWP’s development contractors are developing timber that is cost effective and ultimately cost benefit permits for PWP.
· Assist in the purchasing of logs to supply the mill, and selling of logs to other Licensees to secure a positive working trade relationship with other Licensees;
· Assist in viewing & pricing BCTS timbersales to help in determining the costs of the development and the economic value of the stand to timber to ultimately determine the bonus bid submission.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
· Must have recognized forestry training and experience;
· Is currently a Registered Professional Forester (RPF) or prepared to become an RPF in the immediate future – the individual requires RPF designation to perform this job;
· Minimum of 5+ years experience in forest operations and management;
· Intimate knowledge of timber harvesting, processing and hauling operations;
· Intimate knowledge in timber valuation, including processing timber to achieve the highest value from the log;
· Experience with contract negotiations for contractors in all phases of logging related services and sale/purchase of timber;
· Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize task and time;
· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with contractors, First Nations, public, Government Agencies, peer Licensees and PWP staff;
· Clear understanding of the legislative requirements affecting forest management in BC and the Occupational Health and Safety Act;
· Ability to listen and understand information and ideas and combine pieces of information to form general conclusions and provide management direction;
· Computer knowledge and skills;
· Proven ability building strong relationships with contractors, communities and government agencies;
· Demonstrated ability to develop and implement change;
· A working knowledge of the BC Appraisal System;
· Demonstrated leadership, teamwork driven, detail focused & results orientated.
